This thread is kind of an extension of the Boston-arrest thread, but that thread kind of got off topic and there is some new information.

I'm kind of worried that racial tensions could be heightened nationally this week. Apparently, a Boston cop has been caught sending an email calling Gates a "banana-eating jungle monkey." I guess he's been suspended, and his media defense has been pretty lame so far. I can already hear Reverends Jesse and Al already on the case. On the other side of the issue, we have the woman who made the call making a press conference where she admits that she has been threatened and has worried about her safety. Now, on the day that the cop, Obama, and Gates are meeting for that beer, we get word that charges on that Black Panther voter intimidation case in Philadelphia have been dropped. For those who don't remember: http://video.google.com/videosearch?sourceid=navclient&rlz=1T4GGLR_enUS265US266&q=black+panther+voter+intimidation&um=1&ie=UTF-8&ei=EIJxSuGSNtiQtgfNnaSNBA&sa=X&oi=video_result_group&ct=title&resnum=5#

With a "black" President and a black Attorney General, this case certainly looks political. See http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2009/may/29/career-lawyers-overruled-on-voting-case/ I hope nothing else racially motivated happens here in the next few days because I seriously think things are getting a little tense nationally. I really wish Obama had just kept his damn mouth closed about that case until he knew what the fuck he was talking about.

Edit: Just to be clear about what I meant when I said "media defense," I meant his explanation of what he said has been lame. I did not mean that the media should defend him and their efforts have been lame.

My take:

1) The neighbor did the right thing by calling the cops. If I see someone I don't recognize trying to break into a neighbor's house (and at night, it is difficult to recognize others), I would call the police, and hope that my neighbors would do the same if it were my house.

2) Once the cops verified that Gates was the home owner, it should have ended there; unless, Gates was so over the top in his actions that he needed to be detained. However, if it was just verbal abuse by Gates, the cops should have just walked away or issued some citation. Arresting him was excessive.

3) Barry Hussein should have kept out of it and not had a knee-jerk reaction by expressing an uninformed opinion.
