FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
December 9, 2008

In an effort to provide more localism in radio, Sports Talk 1050 WTKA-AM announces the return of a LOCALLY-based Afternoon Drive Program from 3:00pm - 6:00pm, Monday through Friday. Titled "Ann Arbor's Big Show", the program will feature a stable of revolving local hosts including the return of Jeff DeFran and Ben Holden to the airwaves of WTKA. After the first of the year, renowned author John U. Bacon will also serve as a revolving host. The program debuts on Wednesday December 10, 2008

The focus of the show will be tight on the University of Michigan Athletic Programs, but will also expand outwards. Eastern Michigan University Athletics, LOCAL high school programs, and local lifestyle features will also have prominent roles.

The HUGE Show, anchored by Bill Simonson will move into the 6:00pm - 8:00pm timeslot, to be followed by Dan Patrick until 11:00pm.
Defran co-host the the morning show with Steve Clark back when John Navarre was qb. He is a big Michgian (Fifthian) type homer. Show usually has a hard time in the summer months getting Michigan news when College isn't in class, so look for a lot of Tiger talk. Holden is a big Michigan homer too along with Bacon. So, check it out if you want a show alot about Michgian, with talk of the Pistons, Red Wings, toothless Lions and Tigers (mostly in the summer). I was never a big fan of the Hugh Show, so for me this is the good news, with the Morning Show being great, it would be great to have an afternoon show too. If you didn't get your fix on Rick Leach, here is the link, warn you, he is pro RR and he tells you what Bo called him the first two years at Michigan http://www.wtka.com/index.php?fuseaction=home.podcasts_sel&id=710

Now on to RR, Big Will was in last week, and it appears that Mom and Dad are sold on his recruitiment. Mom really likes the academic side of things at Michigan and Dad just loves Michigan. Big Will is reportatly going to Miami, Fl this weekend to see Miami Beach, women wearing swimwear (or not) in December and possibly my beloved Dolphins. ESPN has a great article on Bryce Mcneal, here is a paste of that article: For the record; it is title Midwest Recruiting Blog:

Wide receiver Bryce McNeal (Minneapolis, Minn./Breck) is scheduled to make an official visit to Penn State this weekend. However there is some doubt as to whether McNeal makes the trip or not. He has already made official visits to Minnesota, Colorado, Oklahoma and Oregon.

In the same story, there is an article about the O$U Buckeyes, here it goes:

Final exams at Ohio State are Dec. 8-10 so Tressel has decided to move all of the prospects who were going to make official visits this weekend back to the weekend of Dec. 12. That weekend many of the Buckeyes' 24 commitments will make their official visits to Ohio State as will offensive lineman Marcus Hall (Cleveland, Ohio/Glenville) and possibly quarterback Kevin Newsome.

Another quarterback that might make an official visit to Ohio State the weekend of Dec. 12 is Tajh Boyd (Hampton, Va./Phoebus). Boyd committed to West Virginia last spring, then de-committed in October. He then committed to Tennessee, but is not seen as a good fit for new Vol coach Lane Kiffin's offense and is looking for another school.
Newsome would be an interesting pick up, with him being a Michigan commitment, than decommittment. Personally, I hate O$U so much, I can't even root for them in women sports.

Brain has some interesting things on his blog today about five-star 2010 Devin Garner and Cameron Gordon, from Varisty Blue:

Cameron Gordon
He won't wow you with his speed, but I was surprised how good his hands were (especially after hearing they may be something of a liability). He was definitely Inkster's go-to receiver, and made a few good plays and showed no fear going after the ball in traffic. Defensively, he showed that he can lay a pretty big hit, though he wasn't a huge factor on that side of the ball. I still think that, if he wants to play receiver at the next level, whichever team he picks will see enough skill to give him a chance there.

Inkster, of course, is also the home of 2010 dual-threat QB Devin Gardner, who's already got OSU, MSU, and Michigan offers. Picking up Gordon would help out in that recruitment.

Iowa is the main competition here, it appears

On the basketball front, Brian has some good things to say about the recruiting there:

I mention it because here's Fran Fraschilla's take on M's win over Duke($):

I coached against John Beilein for four years when were in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference at Manhattan and Canisius, respectively, from 1992 to 1996. Usually, I needed two game tapes of an opponent to figure out what they were trying to accomplish on offense. With Canisius, I was watching every tape we could get our hands on.

No coach gave us as much trouble preparing for his team as Beilein did. What started out as an offensive experiment at places such as Erie Community College and LeMoyne College with athletically challenged players became -- slowly -- a work of art at Canisius, Richmond, West Virginia and now Michigan.

If he can recruit at a Michigan State sort of level, the sky is the limit. Even with success it will take time to ramp that sort of thing up—Michigan isn't going to take Huggins-esque shortcuts like hiring the AAU coach of Michael Beasley—but at Michigan he's got a brand name he never had before. If he pulls in Trey Ziegler or Sykes or Morgan Moses or some combination of the three, we're cooking. (Michigan has 3 scholarships to give in 2010 if they want; either Manny Harris will go to the NBA or Anthony Wright will not get a fifth year.)

We've been here before, of course, with countless Amaker recruits and even a guy like Nate Lubick, who looked to be in the bag before he decided on Georgetown. But now Beilein has something to sell.
