View Full Version : The reason that 3-9 is a good thing.

I know that just doesnt sound right. Just hear me out for a minute.
3-9, A terrible season, we all know its the most losses in a season, the end of the bowl streak, blah blah blah. Maybe a season like this one is what was necessary. Consider that in my lifetime M had never missed a bowl game, had never lost more than 5 games in a season! It is so incredibly easy to become spoiled by that. I expect and demand that Michigan football succeed but am I right to do so? I think this season helps bring the fans back to earth. Michigan fans have been accused of being elitist and I cant deny it. Losing to ND, MSU and UOS helps to make us all realize how good we have had it for so long. Im as much to blame as anyone but we all have taken for granted the football team we love. Not only does this season give us perspective but it also helps to reignite the fire that so many M fans let die. Just as the fans have become complacent so to have the players.
Consider the players that are coming to Michigan this year. So many recruits when asked said that it didnt matter how bad M was. Ask Bryce Mcneal! Sure for some it doesnt matter but for others it makes all the difference. So those recruits who do choose Michigan have an interest in playing for and restoring the pride at UM. Young men with a desire to prove to the world that they are the best can be very dangerous. A team full of hungry young athletes who shiver at the sight of the winged helmet will bring something back to Michigan that I havent seen on a team level in awhile, desire. A desire to win at all costs, a desire to be the best because in your heart you know you are!

Good thoughts. I started reading your post with skepticism, but left thinking, yeah that sounds right. We haven't had much fire or hunger. I think what may have happened in our bowl last year was the guys, healthy at last, and playing their last game, actually wanted to win real bad and simply had more desire than Fla. Who had more desire last year, M or App ST?

I do agree to a large extent. My only wish and much frustration with the Carr regime toward the end was why don't they see what the Oklahoma's and Florida's of the world are doing and get with a spread of their own? We always had the athletes to do it and do it good. FINALLY in the Florida game Carr let loose with the playbook, spread the field, and look what happened. Lloyd beat Florida at its own game!

I think sinking as low as Michigan has is a dangerous situation to be in. While every team has a down year here and there - a horrible season is never positive. When you reach the depth that Michigan did this year it can have effects for years. All one has to do is look at Nebraska or Notre Dame. Those fans got very used to winning year in and year out. They thought it would be like that forever. People can say that RR is the right guy till they are blue in the face - but the jury is still out. He has yet to prove he can win without a great talent running the show (King and White). If RR does not work out like many of you think he will Michigan could be a carbon copy of Nebraska and be subpar for many years. The next two years will be very interesting.

I actually think Nut's point is valid. I believe every program, M, ND, Neb, tOUS, has the chance of slipping into a big hole in today's environment. Visibility has risen for every school, so the special appeal of coming to a big time program for fame, recognition and shot at the NFL is not a unique recruiting advantage anymore.
The talent gets spread out, so the difference from a winning season and a losing one is just a few players. If Rutgers and Conn rise, Syracuse falls. If Ok, Texas, OkSt and Tech recruit well, the B12 north struggles. If RR recruits talent to AA, he'll win, as he showed he could with White and Slaton. If he fails to get talent, the downward spiral may begin. So far, it looks like he will get the talent and rebuild, and that is why the 3-9 year could be a source of hunger. But, I guess you can instill hunger for winning without down years, that might be called good coaching, but that good coaching needs talent too.

Or you can look at WVU or any of the other places the RR has coached at. Bad first year and much better second year.
We were 3 or 4 plays from 6-6 this year. So, I tend to think that an upgrade at QB, new or more experienced current QB and we are back to better days.

Nut,
You and I differ on this point. I believe RR has shown the ability to win without superior talent. You mention White and Slayton at WVU, out of curiosity, how long have they been there? Is it 8 years? I don't think so, and RR was winning at WVU without them.
And, though talent is important, it's not everything. How well did Cooper do with all the talent he recruited to OSU?

Cooper did fine at winning. He just could not beat Michigan or win a bowl game. He actually had a very good winning % - just not in games that mattered.

Nut,
What do you see in RR and his career that makes you believe he won't win at Michigan?
For some reason, I tend to think you feel that "OSU reloads," "we're the best coached team in the country," and "if OSU played ten games against USC, Florida, and LSU each - OSU would win nine of the ten, those teams just caught us on a bad night recently."
And, don't get me wrong, 3-9 is terrible. But, it's a lot like a thorough cleansing of your body and soul. The first step in any 12 step program is to admit you have a problem. I think a lot of the people here that felt Michigan was "just fine" over the last five years still have their head in the sand and didn't take a critical look at the program.
So, I (and a few others here) realize that we had a problem. I admit that and accept that. Now, it's time to change - this season was the first step. If I were OSU, I hope you're completely confident and ranked 1st coming to Ann Arbor on November 21st. This season, Michigan suffered the worst defeat against OSU since 1968. Do you know what happened after 1968? 1969 - a number 1 ranked OSU came to Ann Arbor... I believe you know the rest...
By the way, where is the OSU - Michigan game this year? Oh yeah, Ann Arbor...

All he spews is "tUOS is the greatest" and "michigan sucks". Quite frankly, it just gets old. No educational conversations can be made when someone is SO BIASED towards their team. He will always have the Buckeye goggles on and just he to irriate Michigan fans. Obviously he has NO LIFE to be on a Michigan Website anyway.

I think for White, RR didn't discover him, but would let him play QB when other schools would not give him the opportunity. That is still a skill in recognizing talent and recruiting, but also, things have changed and the spread option is more prevalent, so tougher recruiting battles. I think RR in AA is a better magnet for talent than RR at WVU, but he may find more challenges as his O design is implemented by many schools, creating the opportunity for the next Pat White to play QB at many schools. When you're a innovator in Offense, as is RR, your advantage dissipates over time, until you adjust again.

IF not for RR, White would have been a receiver at LSU, not a household name at QB at WV.
RR never had a recruiting class in the top 30 at WV, yet knocked off teams like Ga Tech, Georgia, and OK, the latter 2 with top 10 recruiting classes. Ask Stoops if RR's advantage dissipated, as he totally got destroyed last year by RR, who was 7 or 8 years into his coaching tenure and still using his system to light teams up with inferior talent.

To be clear, I think White and Slaton represent the advantage of recruiting talent that others won't take, at least at the QB position. Now, after the success you point to, others follow the mold and make recruiting for a Pat White type athlete more competitive, so the recruiting advantage dissipates.
The wins you point to are wins, and after our season this year, I'd take all of them, but I am only impressed with the OK game, which was a great win. If he beat this years GaTech team I'd be impressed.

WTF??? This @ssclown isn't real, is he? A desire to win at all cost? If any young class athlete is thinking about coming to Michigan after Martian and DikRod destroyed our program, we should just show them this excerpt from a fellow Michigan buddy of mine....
"I love watching brilliant offensive minds like Norm Chow, who brings out the best of every player, and maximizes the potential with a comprehensive playbook that features the players' talents and strengths.
Right now, Chow is the OC at UCLA working with a very green JUCO transfer QB named Kevin Craft. Craft first stepped on campus two days before the Bruins' spring game. Both Ben Olson and Patrick Cowan, the two veteran quarterbacks, were injured during spring practice and Craft was forced into action.
Did Chow overwhelm Craft with complicated schemes? Ask him to make quick reads?
No.
He adjusted his game plan to keep it simple and allow Craft to gain some confidence as the season progressed.
Chow is a great coach. He makes timely adjustments and takes the tools that the quarterback has and uses them to the team's best advantage.
In contrast is Rich Rodriguez, head coach at Michigan.
He had the luxury of coaching Pat White - a fleet-footed quarterback who is a threat on options, delayed hand-offs and draws every down, while he was head coach at West Virginia. In short, White was the prototype spread quarterback - and made Rodriguez look like a genius.
But Rodriguez ended up leaving Morgantown and heading to Michigan where he decided that his spread offense would work immediately. Sure there might be some kinks at first, but overall, it should be implemented at once, rather than gradually or in a hybrid version.
Quarterback Ryan Mallett was no fool; a classic pocket passer, he immediately transferred to Arkansas, where Houston Nutt runs a more traditional passing offense.
Eleven Michigan players that had eligibility at Michigan left the school. The writing on the wall was clear—those players were not going to succeed in this new spread system.
Lineman who had been recruited to run a pro set or power running game were huffing and puffing in spring practice trying to adjust to the no-huddle spread. At least one player left, citing a lack of family values at Michigan.
These huge oak trees were being asked to become palm trees. To sway in the wind and instead of being assigned one gap, were now being asked to cover two gaps. It's the nature of the spread. You must be agile, fast and able to run in a no-huddle offense.
The result of this giant SNAFU? A Michigan team that is 3-9. A Michigan team that lost to a below-average MAC team.
You can blame the kicker for missing the field goal in the Toledo game, but when a team's morale is so low, it infects an entire team. Everybody fails to do their job, and the pride of the team goes out the window. And their focus.
Michigan has the highest winning percentage and most wins in division 1 football. This is a storied football program that expects a competitive squad and a winning season.
Thirty-three consecutive bowls. The streak ended. You can count on it, Rich is the man who'll be remembered for it, too.
Before playing Toledo, Michigan has not lost to a MAC team in twenty-four games. Until Rich Rodriguez came blowing into Ann Arbor.
Michigan fans are outraged at the fashion in which they are losing. Sure some losses were to be expected, but it's the way they are losing that is so alarming.
The offense is ranked 109th in the country and the D, which was supposed to be the bright light, is ranked 54th. That's right, Arkansas State has a better D than the Wolverines.
Do the Michigan fans have a right to be outraged? You're damn straight they do. So let me be the first one to throw the proverbial fuel into the fire.
Rich, you blew it. Your ego got in the way of that pretty contract you signed.
All great coaches adjust their offensive schemes to their roster's strengths. They don't force new schemes on players who weren't built for that type of play.
Texas Tech doesn't run smash-mouth football and Ohio State doesn't run the fun n' gun. Do the math, Rich. You don't have the right players and you are insisting on doing it your way.
The result? Possibly diminishing some NFL draft possibilities for the seniors who decided to stay. Ruining a senior's chance of having some pride and playing in a bowl. Messing up recruiting beyond anyone's imagination- do you really expect any player to sign with Michigan when you may not be there in a year?
Just what five star recruit is going to sign with you when it's clear you are years away of getting the spread to work effectively?
Who is going to sign with a coach who has shown no loyalty to his previous school, and put his current school in a potentially embarrassing position by almost forcing some serious brass to have to testify in the civil suit that he insisted was worth fighting?
A man who claims his payout clause was ridiculous at West Virginia, that he was coerced into agreeing to that amount, but then agreed to that same amount with Michigan?
Your words mean nothing, coach.
Michigan fans should be calling for his head. This is a travesty.
While most coaches should be given time to turn around a program, Rodriguez should be not be given that same courtesy. He hasn't shown any semblance of great coaching. Nor has he shown patience. He wants his offense to be run his way, not the way his team was recruited for.
This hiring was a mistake. Huge mistake.
There are better coaches out there, smarter coaches out there.
Coaches who can examine the strengths of a team, adjust an offense around it, and have his players over-achieve.
