I think most Michigan fans are very please with the first half of yesterday's game - I certainly was. Is the team perfect? No. So, I thought I'd start this thread and get some perspectives from people about things to work on - since, I do believe that ND has the potential for a much sterner test on Saturday.

The Good:

The offense in the first half seemed to click. Tate looked very solid when he had good field position, and the O line definitely did what they needed to do - in the FIRST HALF. Tate demonstrated an ability to lead the offense, read the defense, and use his mobility to allow the play to develop. Tate's arm looked pretty damn good too.

The D was aggressive. They attacked the ball and tackled solidly.

Zoltan was his "usual self" and I can only hope we're recruiting someone to replace him, or already have another solid punter on the roster.

Turnovers - I think there was one fumble (that we recovered) and the INT by Sheridan.

The Bad:

The execution seemed to drop off from the first half to the second. Now, part of that may have been scheme and intention - not showing too much of our hand prior to next weekend. If that's the case, I'm ok with it. I honestly hope I NEVER see a prevent D (or O) return to Michigan's signal calling.

DR and all the greatness of his feet - has to give the pass a chance. Right now, he seems to be thinking "run, run, run" - though he did throw a couple of passes - he's got to get more balance - passing on at least 1/3 of the plays to force the D to respect the pass. His wheels are very impressive - and, the holes will open if / when he demonstrates that he can hit a receiver.

When the O inherited poor field position, they seemed to have trouble moving the ball. I hope this is an area where they improve. I would prefer that they pick up at least one first down when this occurs - but, I also realize that RR is keeping the ball on the ground to avoid (potential) turnovers in these situations and as Tate becomes more comfortable, I think we might see him slinging the ball to open up the field and pick up a first down or two.

I do think that Tate needs to add a bit to his frame, since he's in a position to get hit when he runs, and if he goes down - it'll place an awful lot on DR / Sheridan. The offense could quickly become one dimensional which opposing D's can really focus on.

The Ugly:

Though there weren't a lot of penalties, and the PI on Warren was a joke, IMO - the execution can improve a bit. I have no idea what the refs were seeing to call some of those penalties.

If the holding hadn't been called when Sheridan was in at QB, I think the sentiment would be a bit different about him. The holding seemed to be a questionable call to me - and Sheridan did run it well - on that down.

There wasn't much ugliness out there - which reflects what RR and the staff are doing.

And, the only other thing I'll leave on this topic is - there are comments about how much of this team RR's recruited. IMO, he's really only got ONE recruiting class. The sophomores have the benefit of having worked with RR and the staff since they arrived on campus. But, RR's really only recruited ONE class. I'm looking forward to seeing what this team looks like with four of HIS recruiting classes on the field.

It's only one game. I continue to believe the future's so bright we've gotta wear shades.

Good post. Agree with the goods. The game wasn't perfect. Some things that bothered me was Tate throwing the ball away in-bounds. No turnovers and he seemed to know where he was putting it. Just makes you nervous. Haha. Also, in the second half we became very conservative. One drive Denard just ran every play and we picked up 2 first downs. But all in all, not much went wrong yesterday.

Offense:
Tate is the man, period. Mix in Robinson, who had a couple of good runs including the TD. He just needs to give it up a few times because the D was too worried about him. He got tripped up for a loss on a particular play in mind, had he given it to Odoms on the reverse, BIG PLAY! That's going to happen, just change it up a little bit. Use Robinson as a decoy as well...

All in all, great showing in the first half. I heard they were trying a few things in the second half, power game. Wasn't as successful but they did the move the ball. With Sheridan and Cone in, can't expect much...

Defense:
The first PI on Warren was BS (along with the holding call, penalties off-set) but the second PI was a good call. He got there too early. I think he was the biggest disappointment yesterday on defense. He had 1 good hit which caused an incompletion. But he has a hard time finding the ball. The personal foul call, if I was GR, he would have got yanked off the field for that. Absolutely no need for that when you are up 31-0! Control yourself...

Craig Roh had a great game along with Brandon Graham (as usual). Ezeh was everywhere. The defense looked good yesterday other than some of the prevent defense they went to. I'm sorry but Graham was held SEVERAL TIMES including the 73 yard TD pass WMU had and they were never called. It was obvious!

Special Team:
No fumbles on punts, 110% improvement!

Mesko, great punter and it shows!

Made a nice 44 yard FG, that's a plus...

Good all around effort, exciting game to be at for sure. I know its 1 game game but things are looking good in Ann Arbor!

WMU had NO ANSWER for Brandon Graham. He reminds me a lot of LaMarr Woodley...

The one thing I really LOVE about this team already is the challenge that opposing D's are going to have in preparing for them. I heard a blurb from Weis about ND having seven months to prepare for Nevada and their style of play. I wonder how much ND, and others, have learned from Michigan's film last year and how different the team looks and executes today.

I'm also glad that the second and third teams got on the field. I'm glad that Cone got a few snaps, and I really think that RR did the right thing by putting Cone in on the last series - essentially, conceding the series / game and doing it in a way that didn't "pile on" points.

The game experience is great for the second and third teams. I hope (but don't expect) they'll see much time next week. But, I do believe the offense will put up a fair number of points this season, and there will be a fair amount of game time for those on the depth chart. The guys who have been busting their butts in practice and S&C work deserve some time on the field - and, I'm pretty sure that RR is going to make sure they get it. I had the feeling yesterday that he wanted every player to get in for at least a play or two to experience the field and winning.

Also, I love the fact that Michigan went for it on 4th and 1 beginning the 2nd quarter. They lined up in a power I and ran it right at WMU. 'Our guys vs. your guys' style of play!

Do you think Carr does that? Who knows but RichRod is known for being 'ballsy'!

TPI,

I'm sure that RTB, Rad, Motown, and a few others will point out how well Mallett played yesterday and what a mistake it was to let him go. And, of course, Claussen - a much higher ranked QB than Tate. Oh - we're in huge trouble. Tate's only 11th...

This game was over by halftime when the subs started coming in. I wouldn't fault the lack of scoring on the lack of good play. Had Forcier qb'd the offense the second half we would have easily added another 4 td's. It was smart of RR to pull him and play everybody else and try a few experiments. We never could do things like that last year because we were never able to blow anybody out. With Forcier in there our offense scores at will. The game was over at half time so there was no sense in getting him hurt running up the score. I thought RR showed alot of class to Western by not beating them 49-0 or worse. Corners Warren and Cissoko are mean as they come. The calls on Warren were just plain bad calls when the wr ran into him. We as Michigan fans should not have a single gripe. Our team far exceeded all of our expectations yesterday with our starting qb only having to play 2 quarters of football. Bottom line: JOB WELL DONE !
