I think there is a point to this incident that everyone has overlooked.

10 years ago if that reporter would have thrown his shoes at a visiting dignitary standing next to Hussein, he would have been taken to a dark little dungeon and those shoes that were thrown would have been filled with his intestines after one of Saddam's thugs opened him up and pulled them out of his belly while the reporter watched.

The reporter was exercising his new right to act like a complete idiot and living to tell about it, something that an Iraqi couldn't do for about 35 years under Saddam. God Bless democracy!
