While out on the tundra filming a show, we packed up the float plane to head back to base camp. The pilot throttled up, we were just about to lift off of the water when a big gust of wind caught the right wing quickly tipping the left wing to the water. The pilot countered and said "Oh Shit!" We tipped right, the wing caught the water and off we went into a semi cartwheel while still at full throttle. We were now leaning to the right on one wing and one pontoon in the water with my window about a foot and a half from the water while in a full spin. When I looked at the pilot, he was in the process of bailing out his door which was facing skyward. I could not reach the latch from the front passenger seat but my father did from the back. However as the pilot was exiting he cut the throttle. Between that and his weight on that side the plane fell back on two pontoons and the joy ride was over. I think it was the U-M shirt that I was wearing on game day last Saturday that brought us luck.
It was nice to get back to civilization and see that my Wolverines won both games while I was gone. The Tigers on the other hand are probably going to lose the division on the last day again...
Anyhow, glad to be alive to watch the U-M - Sparty game Saturday.:D

Glad you're ok Boss!

Those float planes are notoriously unstable during take off and landing -- remember Jimmy Buffet had a crash in one, and I've known of several others that have flipped over on landing in Rhode Island where I spend the summer.

Hunting caribou. In 10 straight years of going this is the first time we got blanked, but considering what we came back with (our lives), I'll take it! The guy wants us to come back this year but I have pro-staff that will be very happy to go in my place.

We had 3 other close calls over the years there on them float planes but not an actual wreck. Unfortunately these small planes are the only thing to get you back to some of the spots we go, especially in Canada. The Quebec tundra this time of year though is extremely turbulent in the weather department.
