do you think he'd still be fired? It seems like the attitude towards blatant unsportsmanship has changed in the past 30 years, where now trying to gouge someone's eyes out only merits a half game suspension against a terrible opponent. When Lou Holtz was at Arkansas in the 70s, he suspended his star running back and top receiver from the Orange Bowl for disciplinary reasons (they still won). I can not in my wildest dreams imagine this happening today.

In a world where Michael Vick is welcome back, LeGarrette Blount is reinstated, and Brandon Spikes misses only one game, I just couldn't see a team firing a coach who won three national titles. Could you?

Correction, that's five national titles.

Wow....usually we don't regress to the Woody punching jokes until AFTER OSU has beaten you. You guys throwing in the towel early this season? I'm glad you have that though because with the current state of your program and all, Um fans need something to cling to that makes them feel superior to OSU.

Sports Century was about Woody the other day. Woody could bring out the emotions in a fan, positive emotions. Bo was the same way. Bo wanted Woody to apologize to Bauman, but Woody couldn't do it. Woody punched players all the time in practice (not hard). That was his way of coaching. He would have had to apologize to each player he coached, and his players loved him for the interest he took in each of them.

Using troll logic 4 of them don't count because they were shared.

Woody and Martin would have a pretty good go at it. :)

No, Woody punch jokes are hilarous 365 days a year...they really are! If they made one of those silly desktop calendars for "Woody - A Punch a Day Joke: 2010", I would absolutely have one on my desk.

No, Woody Hayes was a different type of crotchety, ol' coot. He'd just haul off, deck you, and be done with it.

Wild Bill, on the other hand, has been suspected (http://blog.mlive.com/annarbornews/2007/07/fired_radio_host_sues_michigan.html) of using his power and connections to make life miserable for those with the audacity to cross him (it should be noted that Shand's case was recently dismissed on the grounds that the evidence presented was mostly hearsay). ;)

From Don's link regarding one of the bullied students:

...Khan said the person then told him, "I am the athletic director, I can go in." He also said Martin grabbed his identification badge hanging around his neck, saying, "I want to know your name."[...] *emphasis VI's*

Most likely because he fully intended to give Khan the Shand Treatment.

Maybe Um fans would have more respect for Woody if he would have gotten nice and liquored up at a restaurant and had been popped for disorderly conduct. Is that what coaching legends are made of?

You wouldn't be referring to Michigan head coach Gary Moeller????:)

Heavens no. Is that what happened? It can't be so...because if it was then a lot of people on here would look like giant, flaming hypocrites.

If you're going to try to put Moeller and Woody in the same group, you truly are a Buckeye fan. You are the only fans who can shake that off and point the finger elsewhere.

No class. No hope for you.

You're right. Moeller was nowhere near the coach that Woody was...I should never compare Gary to someone that actually won a MNC, let alone multiples. Oh I'm sorry for brushing off the point. The original point was....oh yeah an excuse to bring up the Woody punching thing. So it is out of bounds for me to bring up the drunken bafoon Gary Moeller? Please.

I've got one on my desk! Some of my favorites:

Jan12th - Woody's an ambidextrous puncher. He can knock out a player with either hand.

Feb 27th - When I was a player for Woody I kept my head. I lost my teeth, but I kept my head.

Mar3rd - Woody often punched his players. He had to drop one awful player from the team and he said, "There'll be no position on the team for him. My hands couldn't stand the punishment."

Apr20th - In his younger coaching days, Woody was often referred to as "Kid Candle" because with one blow from his fist, his player was out cold.

June 1st - Woody never got in trouble for knocking players teeth out because none of the players had a full grill anyway.

Nov2nd - Q - "Why did Woody throw one punch at an opposing player?"
A - "Because they wouldn't let him punch him twice."

I didn't bring it up but it's another "pass the time as we wait for Saturday" thread. It has as much relevance as the "Should we keep Michigan on our schedule" thread, the "Divide the site in two" thread, and the "Terrelle Pryor for B10 Offensive Player of the Year" thread.

Just kidding about the last one.:p

The coach (especially in college) will always be held to a higher standard- so of course he'd be fired.
As for Vick, the man did his time (whether or not you agree that he did enough is another matter) so he should be allowed to go to work.
My only problem with Blount coming back is the coach said one thing and did another. He said the suspension was going to be for the whole season and then he backed out of it. What message does that send to a kid? Coach should have said indefinite suspension or something if he didn't intend for the suspension to last the season.
Spikes should have lost the rest of this season in my opinion. I know that they say that alot goes on in a pile but that's ridiculous.

What I don't understand is why the Falcon's coach isn't in bigger trouble than what he is at the moment. He was right in the middle of the scuffle that was this Sunday.
