Sam Webb clears the air on Will Campbell...
Sam talked to Big Will and his mother over the last 2 days, apparently Will was upset with a few personal things OUTSIDE of Michigan that caused him to pull Michigan off the list. While talking to Will, Sam said the Michigan Hat will be on the table. He wasn't being 100% truthful with the media, possibly having a little fun. Sam Webb still thinks he is going to pick Michigan!
LaLota will be heading to Michigan immediately after the UA game...
Jeremy Gallon looked great in practice, 3-4 TD's!

i heard the same recruiting roundup and it sounds good. I trust Sam Webb on this because he has been closer to Campbell then any other media member and Sam is usually right

Yeah, Sam also mentioned that the whole ordeal with him registering at Michigan was definitely a positive sign for Michigan because he didn't believe that Big Will applied to the other schools. Pure speculation but I believe that was his personal issue that Sam and his mom discussed. The early enrollment rumors all over the internet probably played a major role in him being upset.
We will have to wait and see on Saturday. Best of luck to him either way, he could be a great addition to the already great recruiting class. RichRod must feel like a kid in a candy store with all the 3-4-5 star talent he is bringing into Ann Arbor. It was never like this @ WVU!

Army Recruiting Notes: Who's in it for Campbell?
SAN ANTONIO - The demise of Michigan in the recruiting race for five-star defensive tackle William Campbell from Detroit Cass Tech might be a bit premature. While Campbell himself said in interviews on audio and video that he had basically eliminated the Wolverines from his list of schools, sources confirmed on Monday that Michigan is still very much alive in this race.
Campbell, a 6-foot-5, 317-pounder, committed to Michigan back in the summer of 2007 but de-committed in September of 2008 so he could see other schools. Since that time, Campbell has taken official visits to Alabama, LSU, Michigan, Florida and Miami. However, most expected he would re-commit to Michigan on Saturday at the U.S. Army All American Bowl. That was until Campbell arrived in San Antonio on Sunday when the player's registered.
Campbell said on Sunday that he wants to get away from home and that he most likely wouldn't be going to Michigan. And Campbell said that LSU, Florida and Miami were the schools he'd be choosing between on Saturday. This followed an interview where LSU defensive tackle commitment Chris Davenport said that he thought Campbell would end up with him as a Tiger. It could happen, but don't count out Michigan yet.
Numerous sources have confirmed that Michigan is still in the picture for Campbell and will be one of the candidates for his pledge on Saturday. One source went as far as saying that he felt Campbell would certainly re-commit to Michigan, noting the big defensive tackle's sense of humor and tendency to joke around.
Was Campbell's elimination of Michigan simply a joke or will he follow former Cass Tech big man Joseph Barksdale to LSU? Or will he end up back at Michigan or perhaps at Florida or Miami? Time will tell, but this one is far from over it seems.

It doesn't make any sense. I think the "personal" issue involved him being upset with fans for grabbing his name out of the directory. Otherwise, why would some random family issue result in him "dropping" the school he's supposedly favoring? Either way hopefully our douche bag fans haven't been harassing him on facebook or myspace.

That's what I said, it has to be the Michigan fans and not a problem with the University itself. I'm going with Sam Webb's gut instinct on this one, he still thinks Michigan is the team to beat! Hopefully he puts on the Michigan hat Saturday and everything can be put to rest...

Ok I do sympathize somewhat with Campbell that he wanted to make the decision himself but because of nosy fans his decision was made for him. Yet he is the one with the Facebook page the Myspace page and the one who wanted the drama surrounding his choice. I also think he made a grave error in judgment when he used his anger towards some fans in making his comment eliminating M from contention. He was mad and acted out like a kid would.
There should be a limit to fan interaction with a teenager but unfortunately you cant control it

Maybe his personal issue involved family members constantly pushing him towards UM and this pissed him off so much that for a brief moment he "removed UM from his list" even though this is the place he really wants to go.

That's definitely a possibility as well, who knows whats going through his head right now. Saturday is probably a serious relief for him when he announces...

And yet all of this could have been avoided had UM not posted his name on the directory. Or, maybe Will wanted them to post it, so he could "get mad" and "eliminate UM".

Sam Webb was saying that it was due to a personal issue, for what that is worth. Why not publish the infromation for these kids on the first day of class? That solves all of this.

I agree Hammer. There's no doubt, though, that the directory listing stole some of Will's thunder and all of this "drama" wouldn't be necessary if the listing was never created. My argument here is that UM is better than this, so it never should have been an issue.

I guess, he has to go with what every other kid at Michigan has to do. I agree that it would be much better to have the information published the day that the kids start class, but it is what it is. He can't be treated any different then any of the other freshmen at U of M. Also, let's remember this isn't about Will Campbell, it's about Michigan Football. No player is bigger then the team. If Will wants to be a wolverine, it's time for him to learn that he is part of the team, not the individual that it is looking more like he wants to be.

From TomVH at mgoblog:
With recruiting sometimes it seems like they're going after different guys more than others, but a lot of times it's just in case. I think a lot of things are actually playing out well for us, and a lot of the attention has been negative with the decommits and the "otter." I think we have a legit shot at some quality guys that are left on the board. I think everyone is going to be happy with this class, and even more excited about next years. I can't say too much yet, but there is a lot of noise already with next years possible class.
So, some decent news amongst all the chaos. Good to hear "noise" about the 2010 class. Off to a good start with the two commits already. I know those two guys have some friends and are working on them.

If there's really even MORE positive light coming from next years class it will be amazing. The recruits we have committed or close to committing are all high 4 stars or 5 stars. Not to mention that it seems like every recruit from '10 is recruiting other players on the board for us. Hopefully it's a chain reaction kind of like this years LSU class, which could be epic if all the cards fall a certain way on signing day.

Another GREAT thing is all our former freshman that will be returning as sophmores(or redshirts). A lot of these guys could turn out to be REALLY good in the future, not that they are bad now. I feel that with the whole group of freshman starting last year, it really MAGNIFIED how inexperienced we were(contagious?). I believe at that age a year is such a huge difference--mentally, physically, and overall improvement fundamentally wise, even more so with a great coaching staff.

Well said. He shouldn't be treated any different then the other early commits. You don't see Forcier, Hawthorne or Emilien complaining that their names were spotted on that directory! Be happy with the guys who want to be here, this spotlight thing Big Will wants is a little too much. He's having fun with the fans and media but A LOT of people don't think its funny. I'm sure the coaching staff isn't amused by it as well...
Saturday can't come any sooner...This class is shaping up really nice, hopefully Big Will is added to that list along with Denard Robinson and Mingo...

That was my take on it as well. That he done it to piss off a family member or members. They all want him to go to U-M and are pushing. Can't blame a family for wanting the BEST for their kid.
