Talk about digging into Tressel's empire. Tucker would pull in mega talent from Ohio. It's like pimping out the job to get recruits. ND did give the HC position to a high school coach thou. Mel Tucker would be a slam dunk hire for RR. Happy New Year!!!!!!! After talking to a friend of mine who likes cleveland and michigan their whole life, let me say, they said Mel Tucker would be a home run hire. He would be like Ron English on steroids. He went to Cleveland State, he said "This would be a mega huge hire, a slam dunk if RR wants to really start poaching Tressel's recruiting base." Again I say "Happy New Year."

Sounds like it would be a pretty amazing hire! I especially like the fact that his experience is as a defensive back coach, which we all have identified as a major weakness on the Michigan team since the late 90's, and the fact that he worked for MSU, Miami, and OSU so he certainly has a solid understanding of Michigan's rivalries and tradition.

Is there really a chance that we get this guy? Do young DCs like him go from college to the NFL, then back to college? I know Romeo is leaving, but won't someone else pick him up?

I don't follow coaching and personnel in the NFL enough to know.

What do y'all think!

I think this would be a smart, progressive hire. Unfortunately based on what I've heard and read, I think rrod is shooting for casteel with hopson being his backup plan. Not nearly as exciting but at least whichever one gets the job should be dependable and mesh well with the rest of the staff.

RR said that he hasn't interviewed anyone yet and won't get into the next phase of the process until after the bowl games. Mel Tucker would seem like a great hire IF there was a mutual interest. From all the smoke and rumors going on, it would seem that StevieBrownforHeisman's post is the most likely scenario but we don't know.

I dont think anyone really knows who is getting hired. Anything that is heard at thispoint is speculation and rumor. I would love to see this Tucker come to Michigan but I cant imagine why a DC in the pros would want to take a step back into the college ranks unless it was for a head coaching job

It's going to be interesting to see who we end up getting.

I don't understand the waiting til the end of the bowl games. It just doesn't make sense. Other teams are adding coaches.... why wait???

If anyone cares THE KNOWLEDGE is claiming the next DC will be Rex Ryan of the Ravens. Don't know why since he was supposedly interviewing with the Jets...

Hi, I usually just come to this site and read about recruiting, and listen to everyone's opinions but never really say anything. I do have a suggestion for a great DC.

Bud Foster from Virginia Tech. His defense was ranked 7th nationally this year, and the VaTech D is always great, in fact they just shut down an explosive Cincinnati offense. This may be a stretch to get him to come here as a DC, but it would be great wouldn't it?

Cincy,

I think that gthe Hokies play some very good football, and that Beamer really has built a solid program in Blacksburg. I'm wondering who RR is going to get, but you can easily argue that Foster's done good things at VT - and, he might have some insight into special teams play - another area where VT excels.

Seems highly highly unlikely.

That would be a BIG HIRE! There are definitely some homerun hires out there, it will be interesting to see if Michigan goes after any of them! I hope so, I would LOVE to see another 1997 defense, that was fun to watch!!!

Maybe a more likely suggestion would be Dick Bumpas, the D-coordinator from TCU. He could be seeking a higher program which Michigan could surely offer him. Fans from other teams have also been calling for Bumpas to come to their teams. TCU has had great defenses, allowing 10.9 points per game this year, second to only the vaunted USC defense. I honestly have no clue how likely any of these suggestions are though.

Where do you live in Cincinnati?

I think RichRod has a legitimate shot to go after some big name DC's, whether he chooses to do so is a totally different story...

Tuberville is on ESPNU and was talking about how he could not be there if he was a coach and that he would coach again. Is RR waiting on these games to finish up to hire him>. I know I am just dreaming.. C-

Not far at all. I grew up a Michigan fan because both of my parents being from Detroit and my dad attending Michigan. The past two years though, I've had season tickets to the Bearcats, and it is amazing to see what a great coach can do for a team. That is why I'm excited for Rich Rod, and whomever he chooses to come in as the DC.

I have a suspicion that RR has his candidate, but he is currently finishing up his (or her) obligations to his (or her) current game, and RR is going to wait until right after the final bowl game to announce the new DC. (Just a guess, I have no inside info.)

But, I don't understand that. The OC from USC stayed on for their bowl game. Isn't the OC from Florida staying for his game too? I'm sure we'll understand why there was a wait once we learn of the new hire, but right now, I'm just stumped.

It wouldn't surprise me if RR has contacted his choice for DC who said he would be interested in the job but wanted to wait until after his bowl game to make any announcements.

I think there is a different perception when a HC loses a coordinator who gets promoted to a HC position and a coordinator who moves on to another coordinator position with a different program. There is somewhat of a loyalty issue in the latter, because it is a lateral move, even if the coordinator moves to a better program. Just speculation...

That's true, I didn't think of that. Makes sense. I'm just anxious as hell to find out about the final uncommitted recruits and the new DC hire.

Bud Foster won't leave VaTech to be a DC at another school. The guy is being paid almost as much as Beamer right now. He's also worked with Beamer now for close to 30 years in some capacity and says he is happy working for him.

If Virginia Tech isn't stupid they will probably name him the successor there whenever Beamer decides to retire. My dad is a VT alum so I follow the program, without Bud Foster VT is nothing. Their total offense was something garish like #112 this year but they managed to go 10-4? I can't imagine them letting him walk away....at any price.

I know what you mean. It's like a being hooked on a soap opera if you are into the recruiting thing like we are.
