Kansas:
FootballCoachScoop has BREAKING NEWS and the FIRST TO REPORT that Stanford Head Coach Jim Harbaugh is negotiating a contract with Athletic
Director Lew Perkins to be the new Head Coach of the Kansas Jayhawks. Our sources tell us that Harabugh will be named the new Head Coach at KU
when the contract details are worked out and finalized this weekend. According to our source he will be paid between $2.5 Million and 2.75 Million.

If true, I think this is a step down from his current job.

That would, at best, be a lateral move and stupid at that. I hope it's not true because I love watching him beat Petey every year.

Found a Kansas message board (much like this one), where a poster (who seems to intimate that he's a writer) is stating that he's got one source who emailed him early this morning with this:

an offer is on the table but KU does have fear of the Michigan buyout possibility in the future. Still talking to other guys, but JH is #1 target. (remember this is source talking, not me) Holtz, Gill, and others are still in mix.

The "writer" has said that this is only one source and wouldn't write anything about Harbaugh until he had another one to confirm. This site also says that the footballcoachscoop.com site in the OP was actually quoting the same source I referenced above.

Bottom line? Eh. Who knows. Just interesting what a quick google search will turn up:

SB,

Touche! This may be the most accurate post you've ever written. At best, it's lateral. And, for those talking about the salary - what is Harbaugh making today? After all, Stanford's probably got a lot deeper pockets than Kansas - and, if Gerhard wins the Heisman, it'll be another feather in his cap.

SB,

And, for those talking about the salary - what is Harbaugh making today?

According to wikipedia (not *the* most reliable of sources), JH makes roughly $750,000/year.

MichMomma,

Well - if Wikipedia is accurate, the difference in coin might make it interesting. However, if blondie down at UCLA doesn't get it going soon - it's quite possible that UCLA will be looking for a coach that can beat their cross town rival - and Harbaugh's proved he can do that.

I wonder - what other major programs are there out there with coaches who are set to retire in the near future?

Dumbest move ever. What the hell does Kansas have to draw recruits? At least Stanford is in sunny CA.

And, Stanford's got one of the nicest campuses I've ever set foot on. And, that northern Ca weather - especially on the west side of the bay - it's got some seasonality to it, but it's never too cold to work out outside... the beach is about an hour away, and the mountains are about two and a half hours away.

Ask NorCal - it's a great place to live...

I wonder if this is a power move on Harbaugh's part to get a raise and more years extended on his contract?

I too agree its not the best move but there are some positives.

1. Recruiting may be easier because of Stanford's entry requirements.
2. Kansas is in the B12, which is one of the top 2 conferences in football.
3. Kansas is only a couple of seasons removed from being a top 10 program.
4. Being in the B12 North the only serious competition is from Nebraska.

God, that would be a phenomenally stupid move for Harbaugh. If RichRod doesn't work out, I'd love to see JH in Ann Arbor.

The only better weather I've seen anywhere else is Hawaii...

As for coaching at Stanford...that has got to be one good gig. Academic standards means you're not going to have to try coaching and rehabbing boneheads and thugs. The only better job for Harbaugh is UM, but that's only because his CFB roots are in AA. I personally would love to see him coaching the Wolverines, because I know he would make them a good team again. He should sit tight at Stanford until the inevitable day when RR gets canned.:)

At first thought it seems unbelievable that Harbaugh would leave Stanford and beautiful Northern California for desolate Kansas. Especially since Mark Mangino probably made the Jayhawks the best they will ever be in football. A move to Kansas is pretty much a lateral move career wise.

However, if he is only being paid $750,000, I can see why he would jump to Kansas if he is offered $2 million+/year. At $750,000/year, the guy is living very modestly in a very average house and saving very little money. President Obama would disagree, but I would probably not consider him in the upper class category.

If he truly is interested in leaving Stanford for Kansas, I am shocked that Notre Dame did not even talk to him.

I think the only reason this hasn't happened yet is Kansas might be scard of a Michigan coming and plucking him from there if things don't work here with RichRod. I don't see it happening next year, but if Michigan isn't 1st-3rd by the end RichRods 4th season, excpect Harbaugh to be our coach.

Flex:

Exactly...That is why Harbaugh would be interested in Kansas. He can make a hell of a lot more salary, Kansas might not have a state income tax, put his kids in great public schools, and he can easily afford the 6,000 square foot house which will not be very expensive. My 3,600 square foot home in Dallas, Texas is worth approx. $370,000. In Northern California, my house would be worth $1.3 million+. It's not surprising that companies are fleeing California and moving to less expensive places. Harbaugh is looking out for what is best for his family.

Harbaugh came out today and said rumors about Kansas are untrue, that his contract at Stanford is being renegotiated out to 2014 and he emphatically state that he is a "Stanford Man".

That's a good thing. I personally like Jim Harbaugh and hope he stays at Stanford until the Michigan job opens up- whether it be next year or ten years. That dirty SOB garanteed victory over OSU in '86 but he is a class act as a player and is turning out to be a helluva coach.

Word has it he just signed a 3 year extention with Stanford. That is a good thing if he is indeed the next guy in line for the Wolverine job when RR fails.

You don't think he has a buyout clause to leave for Ann Arbor?

I'm sure quite a few coaches have buyout clauses. Not for any one school. I'm betting he'd have a buyout clause for leaving for Florida or something, also.
