There is no William Campbell, Marcus Hall, or Xavier Nixon type performances this year. Last year was just special. This year was GREAT though.
It's tough to give out an Overall MVP, so I'll do a break down of the top 5 guys I saw per position.
QB's: Not a great year, nobody was really special.
-- Phillip Simms from VA: Well built, very strong arm. Not a run-pass guy tho? GBW has video.
-- Stephen Morris ('08 U-M camper): Threw the ball very well, accurate dual threat passer. Still looks immature physically, but a natural. GBW has video, and a video interview.
-- Trey Burton from FL: The best QB here, great arm. Had great chemistry with Jeremy Jackson. Florida has their next great quarterback in this kid.
-- Anthony Gonzales from PA: Impressed with his touch on the deep ball. Is the 6-3 lefty a run-pass guy? He is very interested in U-M... GBW has video.
-- Jake Heaps from WA: Wasn't spectacular, but consistent throughout the day. GBW has video.
-- Others who performed well: AJ Derby from Iowa, Spencer Ware from Ohio.
-- Others we watched: Malik Stokes, 6-1 little-bro of Je'Ron (and yes, the family would like a package ... Malik is a run-pass type, did not have a stellar day, but has talent)
RB: Outstanding talent here.
-- Lache Seastrunk from Texas: Not much I can say that you already don't know. FASTest 40 time of the day. Les Miles is lucky!
-- Michael Dyer: Talent on par with kid Seastrunk, same type of players, short, compact, fast. Wish I could of seen more - he sat out pretty quickly. GBW has a video interview with the Arkansasian.
-- Corvin Lamb from Miami: Speed, Speed, and more speed. 5-10, 180, 4.52 ... and believe it or not U-M is his dream school ... hasn't heard from them yet tho.
-- Silas Redd: Explosive, has great balance and moves.
WR: Best group of the Combine?
-- Ricardo Miller: Has it all. Good size at 6-3, good speed (the 4.65 40 is a good time for electronic on this field ... remember, these Alamodome times are ALWAYS brutal, every year), and beat up on his fair share of db's. We have video and a video interview - see what he says about Marvin Robinson.
-- Kyle Prater from IL: Had some drops, but other than that, he was dominant.
-- Travon Reed from LA: Taller then I thought, has skills to be a national recruit.
-- Slotter Markeith Ambles from GA: Gets off press coverage quickly, and can fly.
-- Darius Terrell: If the balls in the air, he's coming down with it.
-- Brandon Ifill from Penn Hills. U-M offer, and he loves it (Pitt, PSU offers too) -- fast, 6-0. We have a video interview.
-- James Easterly from Cass Tech. Tall (6-4) and still somewhat slender, he has a high ceiling.
-- Jeremy Jackson from A2 Huron. The U-M commit almost looks like a TE now, getting bigger and bigger (6-4, 210?), but has a WR-not-TE game. He had a solid day. GBW has video, and a video interview.
-- watch Glenville soph Shane Wynn ...
OLs: Good-not-Great
-- James Hurst from IL: Not huge at 6-3+, 290 but surprising strength and feet, made things look easy at times. Has ND and B10 offers, wants one from U-M. We have a video interview, and action video as well.
-- Maurice Goodman from Chicago Morgan Park: Like Hurst, 6-3 guy who locked up Super-DE-Acree several times. Once he gets on to you, it's over.
-- Robert Crisp from NC: Struggled at times, but never stopped competing. Tall (6-7+) and athletic, however rawer than we expected. We have a video interview, and action video as well. He definitely has U-M interest, plans to visit.
Others who did very well:
-- O.C. Brown from TN. Love his frame and athleticism. Played VERY well.
-- Shaban Dika from NY. Strong, with good movement and punch.
-- OL Skyler Schofner, Washington Court House OH. The 6-4, 280-pounder is another who, similar to Hurst, really held his own. He definitely has U-M interest; GBW has video.
-- We did not see Christian Lombard work out ... he was there, maybe he didn't participate? His top 3 schools at any rate, however, are ND, the Irish, and the Domers.
DL: Slightly above average
-- Nick Acree from VA : Powerful, but no moves (well, one, a spin - GBW has video to put up). VAT commit.
-- Shariff Floyd from PA: Quick, power, and moves.
-- Zach McCray from VA: Stupid fast, good motor, used hands well.
-- Evan Hailes: Plays high, but strength is unreal.
LB: Average group overall (altho combines are never fair to LBs because it's all passing drills)
-- Nick Forbes from MD: Put together well, moves like a safety. Think Roy Wiliams.
-- Khairi Fortt from CT: Solid at 6-3, 220 with great speed.
DB: Special Group
-- Adrian White from TX: Best defensive back here. Strange hairdo, great everyplace else.
-- Tony Hurd from TX: True cover corner, good break on ball.
-- Cullen Christian, Pittsburg Penn Hills: The 6-0+ corner made plays all day, had a number of int's. We have a video interview ... like his teammate Branden Ifill he likes U-M and has a u-M offer, and he has a Pitt offer as well.
-- Christian Bryant from Cleveland Glenville: Love his speed and ability to drive hard on the ball. GBW has video.
-- Deitrich Riley from CA: Could play safety or corner, good change of direction skills.
-- Dior Mathis of course. Combines are in this wheelhouse because it's all speed/agility, no heavy-contact (his short-suit ... is slot his future?). GBW has video - it's up.
