Michigan tailback Michael Shaw is academically cleared and will play in the opener Saturday against Connecticut, but coach Rich Rodriguez said he has not yet determined a starter.

Shaw, a junior who has 400 yards on 84 carries and scored two touchdowns during his career, missed some of camp while finishing his academic work.

"Mike is good to go," Rodriguez said Wednesday during a teleconference. "He's finished with all his finals. He's full participation and will be ready to go on Saturday."

Definitely some good news before kickoff on Saturday!

Also read the following from that article...

Fitz Toussaint, however, is considered doubtful for the opener with a knee injury.

"Fitz does not look like he's going to be able to go," Rodriguez said. "Hopefully with a few more days rest he'll be ready next week."

Jared Van Slyke , a backup safety and holder, injured his collarbone in practice Tuesday.

The latter of the 2 would put Vlad Emilien to #2 on the depth chart. How in the hell did he fall behind a walk-on? Hopefully he's not suffering from the lingering injury he had in high school. I saw him lay some wood in some of those practice clips. Hopefully this is a wake up call for this young man.

Fitz isn't a big setback with Smith, Shaw, Cox and Hopkins most likely getting carries but I still would like to see him. Hope he's ready to go next week!

Fitz may not seem like a big setback, but he was getting the most hype/carries coming out of fall camp. If Smith's knee is alright, I think RB by committee will be fine for UM.

Great to hear Shaw can play. With a solid offense line Shaw should be dangerous so long as he holds on to the football. I remember watching Shaw and Mcguffie their freshmen year and I thought Shaw was just a little better. I couldn't wait till we had a good line and he could run wild like he might this year.
