GR interview from Sam and Andy on WTKA.

Some things of note:

GR caters his defense to his personnel. He is not a "schemes" coach. He will show multiple defenses. Lots of different looks.

Style - play fast. Play with a purpose. Be aggressive and apply pressure. He wants his defense to be on the offensive.

Uses hybrid DE/LB on 4 man fronts. Also uses 3 man fronts. Will usually apply a 4 man front.

Basically the same generic crap that every new DC says when hired.

Many don't like this hire, but I actually think it could be great. I guess we'll see next year, eh?

Many don't like this hire...

Who and why, specifically?

Seems like a good hire to me!

Yeah, I agree, I haven't heard much negativity towards the hire. A lot of people don't like his failure at Syracuse, but they realize he's had a ton of success as a DC. From what I've gathered, most are generally ok to excited about the hire.

Brian cook didn't seem to like the hire too much...

To be fair... Syracuse hasn't been decent since McNabb. It's a basketball school.

Most of the naysayers seem to be tuos fans, so I wouldn't put much weight behind THOSE opinions.

Just about everyone else seems willing to let the guy show us what he can do before ridiculing him.

Basketball and Lacrosse are Kings at the Cuse!

I for one really like what GRob has to say -- especially what he had to say about running the defensive draft while in Denver. This experience, as he said, can be passed on to not only his players, but the kids who might be looking at Michigan out of HS. Their DC will know, for a fact, what NFL defenses are looking for, and more importantly, he knows how to coach his players to embody those characteristics when he time comes. I have to imagine that this will make Michigan an even more attractive place to play if you have aspirations of playing in the NFL!

Furthermore, I like what he talked about with the hybrid players like Ian Gold -- I remember that game vs. NO, and he was a monster! It will be so nice to see a Michigan Defense that doesn't have as many big DL flopping around in a futile effort to tackle a mobile QB or a quick RB. Although I think our DL have been very very good over the last few seasons, I think they have still been geared towards stopping the old-school power running teams like they did to Wisconsin last season. As they face fewer and fewer teams with that kind of offense, the defense MUST make adjustments not only in scheme, but in the overall use of personnel, and I think GRob has a very good handle on doing just that.

Lastly, I really like the fact that GRob knows RR, is comfortable with him, and coached against him. As he said, you really get to know a guy's style and skills by being on the other sidelines and in Syracuse's case, getting your ass handed to you every year! I said this before, that I think that this hire, and the mutual way it came about, evidences the respect and confidence that his peers have for and in RR, and the fact that although the start was rocky, Michigan made a very good hire in Coach Rod!

I am very excited to see the product on both sides of the ball next season. As I and others have said, I don't think it's going to resemble last year, nor anything that any of us have seen at Michigan perhaps ever performance wise.

Go Blue!

Me and because we just got rid of "old" people and got some young blood and what do they do... they hire an "old guy" with what maybe old school defensive values. Not saying he's a bad hire, just wonder if he was a good one...

Quite a few bloggers didn't like it, as well as a few other message boards. He's had more failures than successes according to the naysayers, and I don't like what happened at Syracuse. He also had one of the worst defenses in the NFL for a few years.

I think the combination of GRob and Barwis will result in an aggressive, flying defense. I would have loved to have seen Trgovac, but the move would have been a "less than" lateral, at best.

I do think we'll see some very hard hitting, flexible, and aggressive formations and play.

Who is Brian Cook, and why should I care about his opinion?

Brian cook is responsible for MGoBlog, most (if not everything) on their home page is done by him. He's an Rrod supporter but tries to be unbiased. Basically, he knows his stuff. I at least value his opinion as a knowledgeable supporter of the program.
