What's amazing is they never mention in that article that the majority of americans support the legalization of marijuana. It's all about "His career is over!"
Seriously, no one who has tried pot will argue that it is a performance ENHANCING drug. It is a downer... you get mellow. If he got those medals while he was baked, it's even more of an achievement in my eyes!
If they strip his medals for this, or try to keep him out of the next olympics, for POT, I will be ashamed.

i think the whole Phelps thing is typical of Big Media. They build someone up just to tear him/her down. I think too there's a bit of resentment by some in the media who despise the glory our culture affixes to people who gain it via athletics. They have just seemed too eager to bring this kid down - and because they "buy ink by the barrell" - they're the real whiney ass bitches... Plus 1 is just a troller looking for attention. Kind of like Kim Jong Il banging his pot with a missile test ever few years.

I feel bad for Michael. He can't even go out and have a good time without people stabbing him in the back. These kids offer him a hit off of their bong, take a picture and then run to the newspaper. Kid trained his butt off for 4 years and wants to go out and party - this made me hate U of South Carolina even more.

I get the feeling that the ones who defend what Phelps does are doing the same thing themselves so they think it's ok to tell the young people "it's no big deal go ahead and do it, Michael Phelps does it." Right?
I listened to several sports venues today and you could tell which of the talking heads were using drugs themselves by the way they were talking about this Phelps thing. It was almost like they were relieved to hear that someone in his position got caught, like it made them feel better about themselves.
Thank God most folks were of the opinion that it was a terrible image for the young people to see this from an athlete that was lifted up so high.
He fell off the cereal box too. Kelloggs came out today with a statement canceling their contract with him as a result of this scandal. So evidently they don't agree with you.
He doesn't have the excuse of being a kid anymore he's a 23 year old man, and supposed to be a role model for kids.
He's a free man and If he wants to use drugs then that's his business, not mine, but don't hold him up as a role model anymore.

I'm sorry, but this is a big pet peeve of mine. I can't stand when people refer to "using drugs" as a looked down on thing. It is hypocritical. Do you drink caffeine? Use nicotine? Drink alcohol? Take tylenol or other pills? These are ALL drugs. Everyone in the world is a drug user except for a very few pures.
Everyone has their vices, just because the government decides some are ok and some are bad is no reason to fall in line with their way of thinking. Drugs are drugs. 3 of the strongest and most addictive 5 are legal. (nicotine, alcohol and caffeine)
I really tire of hypocritical statements like this. Wake up. Just because someone supports a persons freedom to do as they wish to their body they are "drug users" themselves? That's pretty narrow minded and flat out wrong.
Man stands up for human rights (http://freekeene.com/2008/12/08/activist-to-possess-marijuana-in-public/#more-949)
He's not a user. Yet he supports it. And yes, for the record, I smoke weed. I used to drink, but I prefer myself high to myself drunk when I want to get a buzz.

i do not use illegal drugs and i do not condone other people using illegal drugs - even if they are young, college aged kids blowing off steam.
I think companies who have hired Phelps have the right to fire him if they feel this episode detracts fom their company image.
those points are irrelevant to my original position - that i think the media is taking delight in this. they were all over his ass for banging some stripper out in vegas earlier this summer.

I don't drink alcohol, smoke cigarettes, nor do I smoke anything else, nor do I or have I ever used Illegal drugs.
I drink a cup of coffee with my breakfast, but my one cup of coffee does not have the power to alter my behavior, or effect my abililty to drive an automobile. So to use coffee, tylenol, cola and things of that nature as a comparison to drugs and alcohol abuse is irresponsible and just plain silly.
I have to put myself in the kid's place. They are looking at this and saying well Michael Phelps does it and a lot of adults on tv are saying things like " give the guy a break" and "it's not so bad", and " so and so did it". These irresponsible, so called adults are going to have a negative influence on some of these young kids. They look to us to tell them what's right and wrong. So if you are an adult you better think twice before saying, "It's not so bad".
I can't believe responsible adults with a media venue as powerful as tv & radio, are saying these things. If they can't say the right thing then the least they could do is say nothing at all. To Michael's credit at least he's not saying "it's OK", like some of the people on tv & radio who are supposed to be more mature than he is. They are not as mature as he is, they are just older.
OBTW:
Roger Clemens and others used undetectable PEDs and he {Clemens} was only caught by the testimony of a trainer and some bloody gauze and syringes. Since Phelps has now publicly exposed his propensity for drug use, the world now has reason to wonder about those medals and world records.
Maybe the Olympic committee needs to start talking to people around Phelps. They stripped Jim Thorpe of his medals just for playing a little semi-pro baseball one summer instead of putting up hay to make 2 or 3 bucks a week for expenses.
Phelps is no better than Thorpe. In fact Thorpe had an excuse. He really did'nt realize it was wrong, and the committee acknowledged that fact, but said it made no difference whether or not he knew it was wrong, it was still wrong, and his medals were stripped! But that was then and this is now. Ethics and ideals have not changed, but people have. I'm not gullible enough to think that anything will be done about this in the world we live in today, but doubt will always surround the entire situation.
I don't know if Phelps should lose his medals for this current drug use or not, I don't know how the Olympic committee looks at that issue ethically.
{I can say that I don't believe that cannabis would enhance your athletic performance}, but if it were proven that he did in fact use PEDs to get the medals then he should be stripped, just as Thorpe was.

maybe if he beat up his baby's mama or got caught selling crack to his teammates or was found with a gun at his favorite nightclub Plus 1 would think it's ok (cos that's buckeye behavior)
plus 1osunut, go back in that hole you crawled out of with your sheltered ass way of thinking.
micheal phelps, along with the rest of the people on this website, don't give a flying fuck what you think about football, basketball, weed, politics, or anything else.

I don't drink alcohol, smoke cigarettes, nor do I smoke anything else, nor do I or have I ever used Illegal drugs.
So that means no one else should have the right to do those either, just because you don't do them? Because they are all the same thing. Alcohol especially. If your not out clamoring for alcohol to be illegal I fail to see how you can justify saying weed should be illegal. THAT is hypocritical.
Don't judge the kid how he parties off the clock, judge him how he performs on the clock, and he performs like the world champion he is. And don't try to say weed is a performance enhancing drug.
