Absolute thoughts and prayers for this young man and his family. The first crash killed his real Mother and this one took his Father and step Mom. Lets pray that this young man makes it through this horrible accident.

My t & ps go out this kid as well.
The whole thing is beyond bizarre. His dad crashed his plane several years ago (clipped a power line), killing Austin's mom and a sibling. Now, his dad is involved in plane crash #2, killing himself, his 2nd wife, and injuring his son. How the hell is the guy flying again with his family after he already was responsible for killing his wife and child??? Tragic story.

Tragic yes, but IDIOTIC comes to mind more readily for me. Private planes are VERY dangerous -- far more so than commercial planes. I feel for the kid but you'd think one would learn their lesson(s) after the first "tragedy."
Not to be callous but for goodness sake!

This one makes me think that his dad was either suicidal or a complete idiot. After you are responsible for killing your 1st wife and a child, isn't it time to question the sanity of pursuing your hobby as a pilot? Poor Austin has nothing left now; in that regard, this is a complete tragedy.

at this point all that matters is that he gets healthy. I would expect that regardless of his athletic status, Michigan will honor its commitment with a scholarship. I dont care how they do it or if it will affect the team for a year or two. All I care about is that this kid gets better and has an opportunity to go to college and graduate.

My thoughts and prayers are with Austin - and those close to him - friends / relatives.

The matter of this young mans health is priority #1 - but how in the hell was his Dad still allowed to fly a plane.

You know, flying a plane is an inherently dangerous thing to do. There are so many different variables to consider every time you take that machine up into the air. Kinda like every time you get in your car. And we dont usually decry why a person, who was in a serious accident that was his fault, be allowed back onto the road after the accident.
Also, I only learned this yesterday, the plane crashed in a residential neighborhood, with houses to the left and right of the crash sight. Somehow while going down Austins father was able to avoid these homes and crash his plane into a garage right next to one of these houses. Was that simple luck or was that a result of his father purposefully steering the plane into the garage to avoid harming any other person on the ground? If its the latter, then I commend the guy for making a final effort to safeguard human life with the last ounce of life he had left.

I would expect that the University of Michigan will honor the verbal commitment from Hatch and provide the kid with a scholarship regardless of his physical ability to play basketball. If they dont I would be seriously disappointed in the athletic department for being so callous. To me there is no question, regardless of the kids recovery, he chose to play for Michigan and that decision instantly made him a part of the Michigan family. And Michigan takes care of their family.

I think schools like Ohio State, Michigan, Penn State and others have proved more then once that they do the right thing in these situations. We can have all the negative banter we want but our schools do the right thing more times then not when it comes to situations like this when they arise. I have no doubt Michigan will do what is right and just.

I read on Mgoblog that UM is in discussions with the NCAA about setting up a fund to help the family. This has been done in the past and should be no issue.
