Re: the proposed excessive celebration and taunting penalties.
I wonder what Bellotti's definition of taking a yellow and green sledge hammer and smashing it onto the opposing team's logo at midfield is: taunting or excessive celebration? Hypocritical douchebaggery abounds here.
Good idea, NCAA. Put something this arbitrary into the hands of already corrupt officials and have them make a judgement call that will alter games.
Stooopid!

Yeah, I'm all for giving the officials power to alter games. (sarcasm, laying it on thick.)
Is it really too much to ask the officials to make a judgement call about what is excessive and what isn't? 15 yds on kickoff, don't take points away. I'm all for a guy jumping around a little, high fives, that's it. Act like you've done it before.

Exactly. These kids could learn a little from Barry Sanders. He never had to tell anybody he was awesome.

reporting "Barry why do you not celebrate after you score"
Barry "Because I am going to be there again, what's the big deal"

I agree the most with the rule on punters. I liken that to flopping in the NBA. If the punter is the one who causes the contact intentionally then there should be no foul. I don't know if we need to alter games with silly excessive celebration calls. I thought last years call against Washington was sorry. If they want to be happy then let them be happy whats the harm?

Excessive celebration rules written and enforced by guys that have never tasted the glory of success on the field, in front of thousands of fans -- pathetic.
I have an issue with all these new rules and regulations. As I have said in other posts, I see sports as a microcosm of larger society -- today, every play is under video review, and low and behold, ever street corner and intersection is too. More than ever before in our history, our behavior, even our words are being judged and scrutinized for any violation of some code or policy in an effort to keep people from offending others, or from espousing an idea that someone in Washington deems is unpopular.
Its a slippery slope, IMO, and I think many people are finding out that once the slide begins (and I think it already has) it is difficult if not impossible to stop gravity from pulling you farther and farther down the hill into tyranny.
Sorry, not a football post...

You and I have butted heads before on the conspiracy theorists issue but you make a good point in the bolded parts. Kinda like the thinking that if one didn't vote for Suckbama one must be a racist.

Back on topic. The part that chapped me was the possibility of taking points away if the taunting is deemed a live ball foul. I think the rules the way they are are plenty if not leaning a little to the extreme.
So far no one has picked up on my Bellotti shot, though. What with the hammer thing in '07 and just watching highlights on Oregon you wonder what Bellotti's thinking. Oregon dances and celebrates and taunts as much or more than your average team. If Bellotti is suddenly the Saint of Good Sportsmanship you'd think his team would act a little less ridiculous every time a play is made. Be an example, chum.
