Why didn't Eli Manning just take a knee? Is there something I'm missing here? Some sort of rule?

I'm pretty sure there isn't a rule against taking a knee. I think in this instance, they were running the ball in an attempt to run extra time off the clock. If he takes a knee, the whistle is blown as soon as he goes down and then they can take the last timeout. By running a play, the Giants can shave an extra 8-10 seconds off the clock maybe before the play is blown dead and they take the timeout.

If he doesn't score, NE calls timeout, NY runs another play then lets the clock run down as far as they can and call TO. I've heard that would have left around 20 or so seconds on the clock. I guess the thinking is that if he takes two knees, maybe that ends up being over 30 seconds. Would it have mattered? Probably not, but I guess you never know.

Yeah, sounds about right to me. A couple more seconds off the clock. Great game though, that being said.

Although, something like this would've been pretty cool to see!
