Sean Avery gets an indefinate suspension from the league for his comment about his exgirlfriends being "sloppy seconds" for his nhl brethren.
I admit that not only did I find it funny, I can't believe anybody objects it. Websites like CBS Sportsline and ESPN won't even print the words "sloppy seconds".
Can someone please explain the outrage to me? It would be one thing if he pulled a John Rocker, Jimmy The Greek, or even a Mel Gibson. Those rants were stereotypical and therefore could be explained as a wronging of groups.
Even if youre a free speech defender, you know there are certain words that you just can't say in public because you know you will be crucified for saying them. Can't the N-word to or about blacks, can't say the C-word to or about women. Can't say the F-word to or about male homosexuals.
When did "sloppy seconds" vault up right up there alongside those?
I've asked a lot of people about it today and I'll pose the same three questions to the board as I posed to the people who I talked to about it.
What does the terrm mean?
What does it imply?
How offensive is the word to women relative to slut, wh0re, b!tch, and C.unt?
(rank them from most to least offensive)

I don't think it is so much about the words as about the context. I am personally pretty happy the NHL holds itself to a higher standard, and demands that the play on the ice do the talking.
TO and Chad Johnson wouldn't survive a day!

Yeah, I saw the interview on CNN and ESPN.
Sloppy seconds would be having sex with someone directly after they just got done with someone else.
It implies she is a whore and the seconds guy is just basically getting his leftovers. It's supposed to insult them both. I honestly have no clue how that dick got her to begin with.

It certainly wasn't the smartest thing to say. As a public figure you have to be careful about what you say and this guy certainly wasn't.

[after meeting the Hansons]
Reggie Dunlop: You cheap sonofabitch. Those guys are retards.
McGrath: I got a good deal on those boys. Scout said they showed a lot of promise.
Reggie Dunlop: They brought their fuckin' TOYS with 'em.
McGrath: Id rather have em playin with their toys than playin with themselves
Reggie Dunlop: They're too dumb to play with themselves. Boy, every piece of garbage that comes into the league you gotta buy it
McGrath: Reg, Reg, that reminds me. I was coachin' in Omaha in 1948 and Eddie Shore sends me this guy who was a terrible masturbator. He would get deliberate penalties so he could get over in the penalty box all by himself and damned if he wouldn't . . .
Hockey has taken a turn for the worse if calling a guy dating your exgirlfriend as getting "sloppy seconds" gets you six games.

Avery is now off the team. Even Brett Hull had some comments on it:

Interesting excerpt from Wikipedia (referenced and all):
[edit] Interest in fashion
In April 2008 it was announced that Avery would be spending the summer off-season interning at Vogue magazine. According to one fashion report "Avery is a self-confessed clotheshorse who has been known to give girlfriends advice on how to dress, and in interviews has expressed a dream to become a fashion editor after his days on the ice"[49] He joined in a fashion partnership with friend and former director of Calvin Klein's celebrity services, Lauryn Flynn. [50]Starting June 23, Avery guest-edited Mensvogue.com, the website for Men's Vogue magazine.[51] He is also a vintage wine aficionado whose collection has been featured in an NHL.com interview. Avery revealed on ESPN that as a child he would play with dolls that he would steal from his sister and babysitter.[52]
Avery's interest mainly resides with women's fashion. Avery has said with men's fashion, "You do suits and pants and that's about that. Women's clothes tell a story. That's what's interesting to me."[1]
