Michigan (the state) has always been pretty good for wrestling. Not something I'm to familiar with, but I've noticed that we are usually up there as a state and university.

Quiet as its kept, the UM has always been good at wrestling. Joe McFarland is a heck of a coach and keeps them in the top ten every year. When my kid was wrestling McFarland used to let us work out at the UM facilities all we wanted. It was great. I've even gotten on the mat with a few UM guys--and for the first two seconds I was brilliant. After that, I was in severe pain.
I did wrestle with Nick Hill a couple times--you know, the current Chelsea running back and probably future UM star--he is also a beast on the mat. His old man is a freakin machine btw. Even at 13 I couldn't pin that kid--and I had like 20 pounds on him. The year after that, I knew better and just watched from the sidelines.
Glad to see the team getting a decent facility. Wish they would give them a full compliment of scholarships--some of those kids only get a quarter scholarship--starters even.
Speaking of Michigan wrestling...My son and I are planning a trip from Tennessee to East Lansing on Jan. 4th to attend a big youth wrestling tournament at MSU. The talent level is definitely stellar in Michigan and it's been my son's dream to wrestle up there.
If anyone is in the area, you should stop by. Wrestling is an amazing sport and watching these kids compete is inspiring!

This year the Big Ten once again will make alot of noise in the national rankings as well as in the NCAA tourney. Iowa and Ohio State seem to be the class of the conference while Minnesota, Michigan, Penn State, Northwestern and Illinois sit a eye lash behind them. I think its a mild understatement to say the the Big Ten is LOADED. Again this year there will be several national champions coming out of our conference. When it comes to wrestling the Big Ten is like the SEC is in football.

Do your research before you look foolish - again.
The Buckeyes return two national champions and many placers off a team that finished second in the nation behind Iowa last year. The Buckeyes once at full strength will once again have a few all-americans as well as national championship contenders. Living in Northeast Ohio and wrestling myself - I know a bit about the sport.

obviously you'd love to think that but then again, as fucking stupid as you've proven yourself to be, any more bullshit that comes from you is as credible as a politicians election year lies, you wrestled like i fought and won the vietnam war, give it up pussy.

They did poorly last year at Big Tens then had a very good NCAA. Big Ten was very tough and many matches in all weight classes with many matches being decided by 1 point or OT. I'm willing to bet OSU does better at the NCAA's then Michigan does. What was the score of the dual meet the last two years ?

Looks like the wrestling team is right there with the basketball team.
How many years are you into the Matta era, and you can only muster a 5th place 10-8 conference finish (coming off of an NIT appearance)? How many tUOS players received individual Big-10 honors this year, and Matta utilizes these highly acclaimed athletes to achieve this? How is it that this is acceptable to fans of "The Program".

Turner was all Big 10 and a finalist for player of the year. Buford is freshman of the year and Mullens is 6th man of the year. Is this the type of individual Big Ten honors you're referring to?
We didn't just appear in the NIT last year we won it. Sure, we faltered to an extent last year by not going to the Big Dance. When is the last time UM made it into the NCAA tourny? Most of us were too young to remember it. :D
Matta just needs to keep his highly talented freshmen classes from bolting to the NBA. Why are we discussing basketball in a wrestling thread anyway?

I distinctly remember some suckeyes giving us shit about winning the NIT a few years back. Anyways, who cares, winning the NIT is not the same as just making the dance, much less doing well at it.

After two days of intense wrestling and upsets galore - The Ohio State Buckeyes are in first place with 4 wrestlers in the semis and one in consolation still alive. They are very much alive for the national championship.

So far two in the finals and Palmer lost to Metcalf of Iowa (best wrestler in the nation). Pucillo shouls win in the semis to set up the match with Northwestern that everybody wants to see. Ohio State might shock the world Saturday.
Funny the best wrestler Michigan has (Steve Luke) is an Ohio boy - go figure.

No doubt about it. The kid is an animal. He just is not wired correctly. He is the most intense, most driven wrestler I have seen in many many years. I follow wrestling very closely on many levels and he is just special. He might be Americas best shot at Gold in the next Olyimpics. Herbert is just as dominate at the upper weight but does not beat you ip like Metcalf does. He made a GREAT comment after beating up Palmer of Ohio State last night. He said "Palmer was content to lose by 3 points (it was actually 4), But I cannot be content to win by 3 points". That pretty much sums him up in a nut shell.
Hey nut, whats the deal with the head coach, can't be in the corner?

The Buckeyes let the NC slip away - Damn it
The biggest shock came when Metcalf lost. Not only did he lose but he got crushed. Then in an act of bad sportsmanship he shoved his opponent during his celebration. Real classy.
The kid was excited that he won so he did a backflip like many wrestlers do - and Metcalf shoves him. He costed his team a point and if Pucillo would of won - the Buckeyes would be champs today.
The future is bright in wrestling as well. Ryan has an outstand crop of Ohio wrestlers coming in and almost the whole team returns - Yeah Ohio !!!!!

The coach has been there 3 years and we have finished 2nd twice. He is building a moster program at OSU and has several state champs redshirted this year and more coming in. The conference is Iowa and OSU - and the little 9. Tom Ryan has the Buckeyes in position to compete for the NC every year for years to come.
Michigan did have one NC as well - an Ohio boy Luke.

Yeah, Metcalf showed bad Sportsmanship. But, it wasn't the flips that pissed him off! Caldwell started hot dogging with his hands up in the air before the match was even over. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_NgyIsO3Rlg&feature=related That's just not acceptable in amateur wrestling!!! Looks like Caldwell might have a future in the WWE with that attitude!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MI2j0fZOpIQ&feature=related
(start viewing at 3:55 in to see altercation in real time)
In addition, at the 4:30 mark of the video...even the commentators are stating that Caldwell "needs to get up and walk off. Let's win right too." Nut, if you follow wrestling half as much as you claim, you know there's no place for anything like that! It has, and hopefully always will be a gentleman's sport. But, not with crap like that!!!
On another note, I'm still surprised they let Caldwell stall as much as he did. Believe me, there's no biasness in my opinions here. I have no allegiance to Iowa, or Metcalf. Respect, YES...allegiance, no. No doubt Caldwell took it to Metcalf in the first. But, stalled out most of the 2nd and 3rd.
By the way NUT...tosu's finish in the NCAA's is proof of how much they choked and underachieved in the Big Ten Championships. Don't you agree?

I did not say I agree with what Caldwell did - but it's his choice. Metcalf has pounded people all year - and was arrogant in doing so. Many kids have done a backflip or cartwheel after winning a state or national championship. I do agree that Caldwell was hot dogging before the match was over. I don't agree with that in any sport.
I don't think the Buckeyes choked in the Big Tens. They lost some close matches and had some bad pairings early on. I think that it was more of a testament as to how F'in tough the whole Big Ten is in wrestling. The Buckeyes had some very favorable seeds at nationals and really should of won the NC. Two upsets in the wrestle backs costed them.
It has been said for years that if Ohio State ever got the right guy as head coach - they will be dangerous. Well they have the right guy and he is turning the program around quickly. Wait till you see the redshirts we have and the incoming freshman. The Buckeyes are going to be tough for years.
I agree with so many things that you just wrote, NUT! However, I do take exception to what you said about Metcalf being arrogant. Highly confident yes! But, I've never heard him bad mouth an opponent, or taunt anyone, or disrespect anybody. In fact, even in his post interview immediately following the NCAA Championship match, he never said anything negative about Caldwell. Saying Metcalf is arrogant is clearly opinion!

Maybe arrogant is the wrong way to describe him. He did make a pretty cocky comment about Palmer after his semi-final match. I did not find that being a good sport. In a way he got what he deserved - In my eyes. Sometimes (in many sports) there is that one guy or team that you cannot beat - for whatever reason. Caldwell appears to be that person for Metcalf. Just think what kind of history he would be making if it had not been for the last two losses to Caldwell.
Wrestling at the college level is so much about pairings, how easy your making the weight, injuries, etc. The parity in college wrestling is so close that upsets are the norm in most cases. Herbert and Metcalf are still the USA's best chance at a metal in the Olympics - I feel. I totally expect the Buckeyes to do great things under Ryan on the wrestling mat. My brother is the head coach at Euclid High School and Ryan is involved super heavy into getting to know ALL the Ohio coaches. He has begun to put a nice fence around the guys he wants - and is getting them. Lance Palmers little brother Colin is a prime example. Tom Ryan is putting together a cupboard chock full of state champs that were ranking in the top five nationally at their weight classes.
