He's either still working out family problems or he's leaving the program. I'm sure there could be other valid reasons but those are the most likely. I really like Sam so if he decides to go I'll wish him luck but man I really wish he would stay.

I haven't heard any rumors of him leaving since the OSU game from anywhere besides this board. Haven't checked the others today though...
Hopefully he stays, he was one of my favorite freshman.

I hope that they are both back. They could both help the program.

That's not a good sign but maybe after he visits his family and recovers from his injuries he will realize that the grass is not greener on the other side. This is college ball. The athletes are bigger, faster and stronger. If he wants to play at this level he has to be mentally tough and cowboy up. Come on Sam, you can do it!

There could also be some academic things that need to be taken care of, due to his leaving for the funeral. Just a thought or a hope.

Unfortunately it seems like he is gone for sure, though RRod hasn't said anything yet.
On a brighter note, Graham is coming back for sure!

Nothing is official, even the B. Graham thing, though likely, not official.
This is from Brian at mgoblog:
We're getting word that McGuffie is again expected to transfer, FWIW. Now that I've posted this I expect him to change his mind sometime in the next fifteen minutes.
TomVH:
It hasn't officially happened. Again, like Brian said, let's not all freak out yet. I was told some things earlier this week that go a long with this, just a little more in depth. BUT, until it's official, it's not official. There's RUMORS that he's thinking about TCU and Texas Tech.

Rita is basically kewl with this. She is pizzed about Carson Butler tho. Apparently she lent him 20 bucks a few weeks ago and he hasn't paid her back.
I love recruiting season. RR is never around so me and Rita get lots of quality time together.

I saw that Nut is a car salesman as well. Tough time to be doing that! Hope he stays employed, otherwise he will be here more.
As for Sam, he'd be crazy to lose a year of eligibility but if you can't take the heat (the cold in this case) get the hell out of the kitchen! Hmmm, seems a president once said that too.

Players who transfer out of conference lose 1 year of eligibility and players who transfer to another Big 10 team (Justin Boren) lose 2 years. At least that's how I remember it to be.

Nobody loses eligibility, they just have to sit out. They can practice, just can't compete in games.

I understand it that if you go to ANY other D1 school you can practice but have to sit out one full season. If you transfer to a lower division program (say App.State:D) then you can play right away and not sit out.

McGuffie will not lose a year, as he has a redshirt year to burn. Butler and Horn both will lose a year, as their redshirt years have been used.
If they go D-II they could play next year with no penalty against their 4 years.

Its supposed to be that way but I've seen some be allowed to play right away like Jeremy Finch.

It would still put him behind one year if he has any NFL aspirations.

I would hold off on the Sam transfer-watch for a minute. With all of the family issues he had, RR probably just cut him lose. Until I hear it officially, I'm not soiling my britches about it.

Agree, but I think that the year will do him well. Another year of training and learning could really help this kid. I hope he stays, but if he does go, I wish him the best.

Found this...
From Texas Tech Rivals
McGuffie has contacted Tech
There was some talk in the weeks preceding Michigan's regular season finale against Ohio State that there would be some type of player exodus from the Wolverine program and that it would likely include a former Texas Tech target from Houston-area: Sam McGuffie. That talk appeared to die down some after that game and McGuffie and Michigan appeared ready to resolve their issues.
We can confirm through contacts in the Rivals Network that McGuffie does intend to transfer and that one of the schools he is interested in is Texas Tech.
So, bottom line, would the Red Raiders be interested in the former four-star running back?
At first glance it would appear to be yes, very much so.
While the talented athlete has not yet received his release from Michigan, he is checking in on various schools in Texas and we're told that he has also checked in with Houston and TCU.
But back to the Red Raiders... We have confirmed that if McGuffie were to receive his release, Texas Tech would like to talk to him but would be very concerned about his past.
McGuffie has a history of concussion issues that dated back to high school and he's suffered more than one this season, which is enough of an issue that the Red Raiders will likely take a pass if McGuffie want to come here.
Our guess is that if McGuffie does end up transferring, that he will end up at Houston.

Butler would be a fifth year senior, porbably graduates and moves on in life

Butler is looking into the NFL draft.
For Guff, I think his concussion issues are pretty big, and I'm guessing part of the decision might even be if he can take this kind of a beating for the next 4 years. He evidently had concussions in HS too.

Apparently it is being reported that RR has said this about Sam:
He's in town, he's going to class, there are still things that need to be decided. The concussions are part of the issue.

Rodriguez: Still no word on McGuffie's future at U-M
Angelique S. Chengelis / The Detroit News
ANN ARBOR -- The Michigan football future of freshman tailback Sam McGuffie remains unclear.
McGuffie, who was a noticeable no-show at Thursday night's annual football bust, is on campus and taking classes, but there are a number of concerns that needed to be sorted through, Michigan coach Rich Rodriguez said Saturday during halftime of the Michigan-Duke basketball game.
Rodriguez, who was in attendance with most of his staff for a major football recruiting weekend, said McGuffie went home to Texas for Thanksgiving and did return, but the two have not had an opportunity to have serious discussions about the future.
So why didn't McGuffie attend the bust?
"Because I think he's still looking at what he needs to do," Rodriguez said. "I've talked to Sam before the break and after the break. We have several concerns. Sam has concerns at home, and we have concerns because he's had multiple concussions, three of them, so there's a lot of concerns there."
Rodriguez did not want to speculate about whether football will be out of the question for McGuffie because of the concussions.
"I don't want to talk anything medically, because I'm not qualified, but it is something that the trainers and I have talked about and are concerned about," Rodriguez said. "That's for his future, wherever he may be."
Personnel issues
Tight end/defensive end Carson Butler and tailback Avery Horn also did not attend the bust.
Neither is expected to return to the Wolverines .
"Carson, I haven't talked to him yet, but the indications are he's going to try to get into the (NFL) draft," Rodriguez said. "Avery Horn, I've talked to him, he may be transferring."
There also has been considerable speculation about junior defensive end Brandon Graham, named the team MVP on Thursday. But Rodriguez insists Graham is returning to Michigan and not headed for the NFL.
"Yeah, oh yeah," Rodriguez said when asked if he expected Graham back. "We didn't really talk about it. We talked about it a little before right after the season. ... Sometimes you fill out the paperwork to see where you're at, and I don't even think he did that.
"He's already one of the leaders of the team, and I think he'll be a great senior leader for us. I think he's going to have a fabulous senior year."
Evaluations
Rodriguez has said since the end of his first season that he will evaluate every part of the program, something he said he always has done.
"I'm evaluating a lot of stuff, but most of that's done," he said. "Right now, I'm on the road just about every day recruiting."
There has been speculation about the status of his assistant coaches. Asked what it means that the evaluation is done -- does that mean his assistants are back? -- Rodriguez was coy.
"It means I'm evaluating everything," he said, smiling.

If he is a projected first rounder with the new pay scale kicking in this season - he might be gone. A player might want to stay in college another year but because of the way first rounders will be getting paid this year staying might be an unwise business choice.

The majority of you know more about this than me, but if he no longer plays football because of injury does he keep his full ride until graduation?

Dudes, Sammy is gone. I feel for the kid, but he is gone.
RR I think is actually trying to look out for him by encouraging him to leave. The kid has enough trauma in his life already. He needs to get back home and keep his head in the game. I just got a feeling that if he stays,, he will get destroyed.

If he doesn't play ball any longer, I don't see him staying around. He would go back home and be close to his family.

I've had a bad feeling about this kid staying for a while now. I sincerely hope he stays but I think the yellow rose of Texas is calling.
As for Graham, everything I have run across indicates he is staying for his senior year.

I remember the announcers saying during either the Purdue or NW game that McGuffie came from a broken home and it was remarkable that he has overcome such obstacles. I had never heard anything along these lines before and the fact that he has spent so much time at home the past few weeks to deal with the death in his family alludes that he may have greater family issues than reported. Can anyone shed light on this?

All I remember is that his family was planning to relocate to AA with him. Clearly that didn't happen, but its indicative that there might be a need for him to be close to them, for whatever reason.

best way to answer this question is that Michigan had a player a couple of years ago that would of been perfect for RR system in ANtonio Bass, he signed out of Jackson Michgian and was a four-star ath, Lloyd said later his injury set Michigan back three years. Anyways, he hurt himself in the offseason, and has never been able to play again. He than became a hardship case and he is allowed to keep his scholorship and that scholorship does not count against Michgian

There could be a case for Sam to keep a scholarship until graduation through some medical determination. And, you are right, that scholarship will not count against the program. It's pretty similar to when a guy needs a fifth year to finish a degree while he is not playing. It's a degree completion scholarship and does not count against the program.
