Well that would take care of Schaeffer being the problem for the defense that so many have addressed on here. I still think he was a solid hire but if goes to Oxford I'll be able to watch his career closely.

Who would be some candidates for the D Coordinator job if Shafer does leave?

I don't know what to think of Shafer. Some have said it was RR's choice in defense for that pathetic Purdue game. The main thing is the defense is a total mismatch right now, RR brought all of his (bad?) coaches from WVU who coached the 3-3-5. Shafer has always done the 4-3. Not to mention RR's old staff is all out of their normal positions.

Accidently double posted... oops. So I guess I'll just throw out a dream name that won't happen:

Tommy Tuberville.

Neither do I, but hypothetically if he does who would you like to see as DC?

That is the million dollar question. I don't know, it could be anyone.

If the guys got any aspirations to be a head coach at a big school someday, this year is a great year to find a mid major job. Tons of openings in the midwest.

I hope he's interested in the job because he knows he sucks and not because he's dissing Michigan.

He has done a good recruiting job. Plus, I have all the turnover in the defense. We have had a new DB coach the past three years. It would just be nice to have some consistence in our D coaches.

We need the strong defenses of old. That is what keeps teams in games when the offense stumbles. If he does leave perhaps we could lure a USC assistant?

Bossgobbler,

I think what we need is a deep, solid defense - lineman, linebackers, and secondary - that punishes our opponents. Hard hitting, aggressive, quick, agile, fast, intense, and strong with well planned schemes. Nothing would please me more than to have our opponents look at an upcoming game and think - "I don't know if or how we can score on them."

The D from the NC season was great. I'd like to see a D with that passion, ability, and commitment.

With their OC likely gone to Washington, do you really see the DC leaving too for another school??? That's like tearing the team completely apart. But, I do agree, it would be great to get somebody that came from a strong background like usc. Especially from a defense like usc has.

I want Shafer to stay first and foremost! If he leaves for Miami, all the power to him. How many chances do you get to become a head coach of a Div. I team? Especially at a school like Miami 'Cradle of Coaches'. Woody and Bo coached there so Miami has seen their fair share of good coaches...

I really hope he stays but can't be mad at the guy if he decides to become a head coach. Good for him...Let's see what happens, I'm sure Miami will announce a head coach soon due to recruiting! We should find out very soon.

I interviewed for the DC job, but the only question they asked me was: How in the heck did you even get in here? Then they opened the door with my head and tossed me into traffic on State Street.

Elno,

At least you got in the door... Staying inside - well, that's a challenge with every job interview.

True that!

However--if I were the DC this would be my plan:

REcruit the baddest d lineman there are. Ole Miss whooped Florida because they have a great d line. period. D linemen make the rest of the d look great. linebackers, corners, safties. You could have a great secondary and great linebackers but if the QB has all day to throw you are going to get picked apart. period. Saban knows this. Carrol knows this. Fock, Ed Ogeron knew this. BO KNEW THIS! That is what I want to see from Shafer---not the frill recruits. I want to see the monster d lineman. If he can't do that, or won't do that, fock him. You can't scheme your way out of weak personnel. Go back and look at some of the d lines of the past. Look at Woodson's d-line. Without those d lineman, Woodson would NEVER HAVE WON THE HEISMAN! (And that is why Trent Morgan did not win it this year)
Yeah, Woodson made some SPECTACULAR interceptions--but he did so because the QB's were running for their friggin lives back there! And the reason they were running for their friggin lives is because they had to throw because they couldn't run the friggin ball.

I went back and watched a whole bunch of Youtube clips yesterday--UM beating South Caroline, Colorado State, Colorado, North Caralina State, Texas A&M, Alabama, Florida, Auburn....on and on. You know, just to make myself feel better--and it worked! Then I got drunk, beat the wife and watched some porno.

The new rumors are that Miami has been looking into some of D'Antonio's assistants......narduzzi, staten, treadwell......all three have Miami ties.
