Check out some of ol' Ronnie's artistry in the Rutgers/Louisville game. 49-0 Rutgers lead at half. Ron went over to the Rutger's coach at half and yelled at him for scoring so many points. Why did we ever let this guy leave?

Actually, if you hear the commentary at the beginning of the game, they were talking about Ron English just wanting to see effort from the unit, and how crazy bad the D was as a unit even before English got there. BUT, 35 points in the second quarter is ridiculous ~!

I might be alone on this, but I actually liked RE. He seemed like a good motivator, was down on the sidelines. Obviously, as we have come to know, a lack of fundamentals in tackling have been the culprit, as well as bad secondary play. Was this just a lack of talent??? Possibly.

You aren't alone on RE! I like him too, I was hoping RichRod would keep him as DC because he only coached for 2 years and really didn't get a chance to prove himself. Yeah, Michigan had serious let down games, but the 2006 defense was decent. They folded at the end of the year. They did make good adjustments in the 2nd half of tUOS game but came up short. If you remember, it was 28-14 at the half so the D only gave up 14 points after the half including the helmet to helmet by Crable which could have possibly taken away 7 of the points...
Last year was just bad to start the season! They played 2 VERY GOOD OFFENSES to open but they still should have won the opener. They had some fresh faces starting on defense and they just couldn't tackle in the open field. Sounds familiar! That's why the spread has killed Michigan in the past, YOU HAVE TO TACKLE or it's BYE BYE!!!
English did have a lot of fire, very passionate! I hated to see him go but that was RichRod's decision so I just have to roll with the punches.
I would hate to see Shafer go, this year was just a total disaster in all 3 phases of the game. Can't really point figures at anyone because it was bad all the way around. Michigan will turn it around, I have faith!!!

I liked RE and the intensity he brought to the sidelines - and, honestly thought he should have been given more consideration for the HC position. The tough thing about him is - he wasn't here very long, the D in '06 played well until the last two games, and I thought he recruited well but didn't have enough time to develop the talent. The traits I liked about RE were his aggressive and attacking schemes on D.
I, too, was disappointed with all three phases of the game this season. And Shafer hasn't exactly had a full cupboard to work with either. I liked our line play, and the secondary just drove me crazy - way too many 3rd & longs into first downs. It seems like we've had one stellar area of the D for many years - either the line, backers, or secondary was strong - but, it's a rare thing for all three areas to be solid at the same time. I'm hoping that Shafer can create schemes and develop the talent, with Barwis and the other assistant, to make the D a force to be reckoned with in the future.

I wonder if English is kicking himself for not taking the Bears job a few years ago when he decided to stick with Carr.

Watching this ridiculous Florida O tonight makes me even prouder of the number we did on them in the Cap One Bowl. Like it or not, English gets a lot of credit for it.

As a Bear fan I'm so glad he didn't.
My take on English, take it with a grain of salt.....
he's not a horrible DC, but neither do I think he is all that great or really worthy of having been given the HC reins at UM. Had he been kept as DC I would not have been against it but I think this years results would have been similar regardless. Being emotional does not equate being a great coach, motivator, leader or teacher of football.
