I think the CBJ's 1st playoff appearance will be a short one. Wings in 5

The Wings are not looking great going into the playoffs, and that worries me....but Columbus hasn't looked great the last few weeks either. Of all the teams that Detroit had a chance of playing in the first round, I least wanted Columbus as Steve Mason can be dominating at times. The good news is he is a rookie and pretty much the entire Columbus team has no playoff experience including their best player Rick Nash.
Hopefully Hossa is OK after leaving the game a couple nights ago. I still think they will at least get through the first round, but the defense and Osgood really need to step it up. The good thing is the entire team has not only experience in the playoffs, but a ton of it.
It's playoff time, and this is why the Detroit Red Wings are the DETROIT RED WINGS! LET'S GO RED WINGS!

Columbus has played Detroit tough this year - Nash is a very good player, and they have been getting some good goal tending. Still, I think Detroit wins in 6, and like this matchup because Detroit does not have to travel to Anaheim, and I don't have to stay up until 1:30am watching them play on the west coast (during this round anyways).

Bluejackets pull of a huge upset in 7 games. Mason will continue to play out of his mind. The Pens will take the Flyers in 6.

Mason has been kind of average since his bout w/ mono. I wonder if he has lingering effects. What the CBJ needs is a healty and effective Brassard & Modin back in there.
Huselius Brassard Nash
Umberger Vermette Williams
Voracek Malhotra Chimera
Modin Peca Torres
Those lines healthy could give the Wings a competitive series. They're not so they won't.

Given the horrid goaltending we have these days, anyone could give us a run. I'm not expecting my Wings to last long, and a CBJ upset is very probable.

Nice game - Ozzie looked like the old Ozzie, hopefully he can keep it up. Pretty smooth game, without having guys like Zetterberg, Hossa, and Datsyuk having good games...

Another good win by the Wings. Osgood was great and the Wings got to Mason. They are really looking good.

Furley,
Though I thought the Wings would win this series in 5, I do hope they win it in four and get an extra day or two to rest their legs. My fingers are crossed that they'll go deep into the playoffs this season and every extra day they have to rest or "not play a game" is good.
Two down - fourteen to go...

Couldn't have asked for a better playoff start. Especially with the Sharks sinking. As Gene Wojo says, I haven't seen anything this lopsided out of Columbus since the Suckeyes went to the BCS Championship game ;).

The thought of playing Anaheim in round 2 makes me a little nervous. Assuming the Ducks get by SJ, they will be a tough out in round 2.

Anaheim, if they prevail, did Detroit a huge favor by knocking off the Sharks and giving Detroit home ice throughout the Western Conf finals.
Columbus was a great 1st round draw, and allowed Ozzie to get his confidence and the team to get some momentum after sort of stumbling during the last few games of the regular season.
It has been hilarious watching these game on the Columbus FSN affiliate, where there is such a complete and utter lack of hockey knowledge. They did a "man on the street" interview before the series and most Columbus fans could not explain the playoff system, let alone more "complex" concepts like icing!
I've watched a lot of games at Nationwide - the fans think that every time two players brush against each other that there should be a penalty, cursing the injustice of it all. How an NHL team ever got located here is puzzling - but I guess it is all about the attendance, and they pack that arena almost every night.

You should see the Carolina Hurricane fans down here in Raleigh. Everytime someone looks at their player wron gthey want 2 minutes for it. Really entertaining.

The Wings showed their style of playing last night. The Blue Jackets tried to get physical with Detroit without any success. Three Blue Jackets went after Franzen behind the net trying to get physical, leaving Zetterberg wide open in front of the net for a goal. That shut the fans up pretty quick.

Sweep! Great job by the Wings this series scoring 4+ each game against Mason. Not surprised the Columbus fans were throwing trash on the ice. So typical.

Take off the tUOS jersey, but on the Blue Jacket jersey, drink like a maniac, act like a total idiot and embarass yourself - just another night in Cowtown.

Great series. Good job Wings!
As far as Columbus fans throwing garbage on the ice....umm color me not surprised. I did like their crowd noise but please if you are a Jackets fan and sit by the glass...its ok not to continuously pound on it like a monkey at a zoo. I wish they would relocate those board mics because man that sound is annoying.
Here come the mornings of dragging a$$ because of the out West start times.

seriously? Pistons versus Pacers ring a bell? How about the burn the city down riots in Detroits that occur after championships? Bad behavior is not absent in the state up north.
For the record, that was a horrendous call by the linesman. The refs swallowed their whistles for the entire thrid period and then that douchebag makes that ticky tack call with 90 seconds left. The Wings were the better team, unquestionably would have won the series, and quite likely would have won in OT.....but let the players manifest that - not some linesman.

The call was the right call. I can understand being upset by it if on the recieving end. That doesnt change the fact that a player coming off the ice cannot touch the puck until the player he is replacing is within 5 feet of the bench. He was clearly over 5 feet from the bench and there were clearly 6 players on the ice. The linesman has to make that call, period.

Sorry, Mike, review the game. It was a no-brainer of a call. The refs will swallow their whistles on subjective things like roughing, cross checking, etc., but never too men on the ice (that I've seen), that's an automatic.
When exactly did Detroit get burned down, I missed that one? The proper response is to condemn bad behavior, not point back and say "you did it too!". When did I ever excuse the Pistons / Pacers incident? Did a Detroit Red Wing climb into the audience and attack a fan, like the Pacers did?
I like this line from the Freep:
"And on cue, the more inebriated in attendance tapped into their inner Buckeye, tossing beer cans and plastic water bottles onto the ice, interrupting the game and embarrassing their team."

Too much logic for a hockey-illiterate city my friend. The funniest quote was from the coach: "By the rulebook, it’s probably the right call. By the circumstances of the game, I didn’t like the call." Well, if its the right call, that is all. What part of that is not understandable? And if your entire post-season comes down to one call away from being swept in the very first round, then you should have done a better job not putting yourself in that position in that first place.
Sad part is, the crowds actions took away from a stellar Blue Jacket effort and a fantastic game last night. Go Wings!!

I agree. I feel sorry for the Blue Jackets fans that had nothing to do with the behavior of the garbage throwers. Now they will be lumped into the "typical drunk Columbus fan" sterotype. Again I loved the crowd noise and they have some good talent in Nash and Mason. For the life of me I do not understand why every team thinks they are going to rough up the Wings. Usually leads to disaster for them yet they continue to do it.

There is never an excuse for badly behaving fans, but come on, if you're going to get indignant, do it on a call with some sort of controversy involved, ie, a penalty shot allowed when a player barely gets touched and flops when driving to the net or something. To act so insane about a too many men on the ice call? That is pathetic.
Ownership should require that these fans go through some kind of 8 hour "Hockey 101" boot camp prior to getting season tickets renewed, this is embarassing.

Those bastards weren't bitching when a call got uos a MNC against Miami, were they? At least this one was a no brainer.
MM's exactly right. The refs usually let the physical contact calls go towards the end but not a too many men call.

I don't get the need for the caps. I predicted Wings in 5. In my post game post I clearly stated the Wings were the better club, were going to win the series, and likely would have won the game had it gone to OT. I wanted to see the game end naturally, not aborted with a contraversial call.
Too many men on the ice is not contraversial in and of itself. It is an automatic call. The contraversy lay with the linesman's judgment that Voracek was in excess of 5 feet from the bench when Modin played the puck. I've watched the replay on the CBJ's and TSN's websites and I think it is debateable that Voracek exceeded 5 feet. In my view, if it is debateable, the linesman should have swallowed his whistle as the refs had the entire 3rd period up to that point.
I've been following hockey for almost twenty years. Is that long enough for you?
