I think Michigan fans should be required to live in Michigan. I am willing to bet that there aren't too many people in Ann Arbor wearing Michigan gear. In the Cooper days there were all kinds of so-called Michigan fans in Ohio, but now you don't see near as many. Wonder why?

watched enough to see if pryor's mechanics have changed and it still looks like he has that funky 3/4 whatever it is going on. in all fairness I did see him make a good throw and completion on the run.

I said that wrong. What I would like to know is: Are there many people in AA or Michigan who go around wearing Ohio State gear and are Ohio State fans? There seem to be tons of Michigan fans here in Ohio. I think that some of them just like to stir the pot. IMO

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- They tried to spice up the spring game at Ohio State. From conventional scoring structure (no points for "explosive plays") to Jim Tressel's red Hawaiian shirt to a national spring game record 95,722 fans inside Ohio Stadium, the Buckeyes wanted more than a scrimmage out of Saturday's festivities.

Yet a half hour deep, the day felt like just another weekend in the Big Ten. The Gray side led the Scarlet 3-0. The teams combined to provide a punt for every point. A little foliage and one side nicknamed the Hawkeyes would have made this seem real familiar.

So it goes with the Buckeyes -- although things might appear to change, everything ends up about the same.

And so it will be in 2009. Tressel's ninth Ohio State squad will rely on a Sanzenbacher and a Spitler, a Herron and a Homan. These aren't popular names in May. But come December, after another finish around the top of the Big Ten and during preparation for another BCS bowl, they'll be as well known as Laurinaitis, Jenkins and Wells.

Sure, Ohio State needs an overhaul. Just place the winter's Fiesta Bowl depth chart next to a list of projected starters for the fall. On offense, the Buckeyes boast a new tailback, new tight end, two new starting receivers and three new linemen. The numbers seem daunting, even for this perennial powerhouse.

"The last time we played," Tressel said, "there were 28 seniors and three juniors who aren't here. This is our team now."

And this new team knows the expectations in these parts. The last national title came in 2002, but OSU has played in two other BCS championships and six BCS games in seven years.

Feel free to add another to that list right now. This is far from Tressel's best group, and the schedule includes a visit from Southern Cal and a presumptive conference championship game in November at Penn State. But given the changes and the challenges, there's a confidence here that things will work out by Thanksgiving.

"That's why a place like Ohio State is great," receiver Dane Sanzenbacher said. "You always have that great recruiting class coming in to replace the guys who are going."

Fitting that such a thought would arise on the first day of the NFL draft. Everyone in the locker room figured that by night's end, the core of the Buckeyes' recent success -- running back Beanie Wells, corner Malcolm Jenkins, linebacker James Laurinaitis -- would know where they'd begin their pro careers. During the day, even with the discretion necessary to evaluate a spring game (like we said, the Hawkeyes weren't here), their replacements showed the drop-off might be minimal.

For starters, Wells' former backups looked strong Saturday. Expect a season-long fight for playing time involving Dan Herron, Brandon Saine and Marcus Williams.

And then there's quarterback Terrelle Pryor, now a sophomore phenom, who has more in his legs than Saturday's five-carry, minus-17-yard performance.

Sanzenbacher, who sat Saturday with a bad knee, will team with deep threats Ray Small and Taurian Washington outside. Small and Washington each caught a Pryor touchdown pass Saturday, cementing themselves as the successors to Brian Robiskie and Brian Hartline.

The defense figures to struggle minus Laurinaitis, Marcus Freeman and Jenkins in every facet. Ross Homan, the lone returning starting linebacker, said he still looks for his former teammates between plays on the field, or when he walks into position meetings.

"It's crazy not having James and Marcus in there," he said.

Don't expect that feeling to hang around until September.

Tressel has veteran reserves Austin Spitler and Tyler Moeller high on the depth chart now, but heralded sophomore Etienne Sabino will soon grab one of those spots. And if Lawrence Wilson's health doesn't abandon him for a third consecutive year, this defense won't slip at all.

Nobody outside the program is thinking national championship with this team. A matchup with Florida, Oklahoma or Texas would look like last year's 35-3 loss to Southern Cal.

But all those departed big names couldn't vault Ohio State past the best teams in the country either. Laurinaitis, Wells and the rest made the Buckeyes the class of the Big Ten and put them, at worst, atop the nation's second tier of teams. Even with all the defections, Pryor and the replacements can maintain that status.

Wait and see. Ohio State will win double-digit games again, and play in a BCS game again. Nothing ever changes around here.

That makes more sense. And no you won't find many, if any OSU fans north of the border.

This pretty much sums up the state of OSU football. Good enough to play a BCS game each year but not good enough to beat the top dogs.
As for my team, I want our goal to be to win the MNC each and every year, PERIOD. Yes, they have a ways to go to achieve that goal but its not as far away as some here think it is.

I did not watch the game yesterday (I have it taped) but from what I heard TP threw the ball downfield and on the money. The Buckeyes played the game like they normally do - split squad style. The players that played well from the reports in the paper were TP, Herron, Saine, Boren (playing out of position), Rolle, Homan, Sabino, Small and Washington.

95,000 people showed up to support the young Buckeye team - not 35,000 like that school up North pulled. The Buckeyes also got a commit from McVey yesterday (linebacker from St.Ignatius). He picked OSU over Michigan, Michigan State,Notre Dame and others.

Yeah, the one fifty yard pass, the secondary fell asleep and left Washington standing in the end zone by himself. As soon as they realized, it was too late. That TD was more bad play from the defense than TP making a play.

The second TD, I'll give credit where credit is due though. That was a hell of a throw by TP. Good arm strength, hit him on the run, and great moves by Small to get it in the endzone.

TP did have around 180 yards throwing the ball, but 100 came on those two plays. I'd be more worried about his -17 yards rushing. Is JT really going to be using him as a drop back passer? Big mistake if you ask me.

Nut,

So - 9 players "played well" - does that mean the other 13 starters and all special teams really "didn't play well."

Please enlighten us. Oh, I forgot - you didn't see the game. So, tell me what conclusions you're going to reach, what observations you're going to make, and why in the world we should put any credibility in any comments / observations you share...

This is very disturbing on many levels:

1) Boren was "out of position". Does that mean he was jogging to the line of scrimmage and not standing there with his hands on his knees after each play, which is his preferred position?

2) With 95,000 tUOS fans gathered in Columbus on Saturday, what was I supposed to do if I needed a pizza delivered or my lawn mowed?

3) Can the Horseshoe accomodate that many work trucks?

4) Can you imagine the effect on Walmart share prices with all of those Walmart Buckeyes spending their money on draught beer and stuffing hot dogs in their fat faces instead of buying discount Chinese tUOS hats and XXXL t-shirts?

Pryor passes: Quarterback shows marked improvement throwing ball
Sunday, April 26, 2009
By Ken Gordon
THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Quarterback Terrelle Pryor did things yesterday he could not have done last year, and despite sitting in a blazing sun, that had to give the throng that showed up at Ohio Stadium shivers of anticipation for the fall.

The sophomore needed to make strides as a passer this offseason. His two long touchdown passes in Ohio State's spring game were things of beauty, leading Gray to a 23-3 victory over Scarlet in front of 95,722 fans, a national record for a spring game.

One was a rainbow pass down the sideline, the other a sizzler between defenders.

But maybe even more impressive than the throws was what Pryor said about them afterward.

"I don't know, that's just natural," he said, shrugging. "I just read defenses and see where the receiver (is) at and see the opening and zoom it in there."

He said it with nonchalance, as if it's something he has always been able to do. But it's not, which he later admitted. Last year, he was not far enough along to read and react as well as he did yesterday.

"I thought Terrelle threw it extremely well," said coach Jim Tressel, who was so pleased -- and hot, apparently -- that he deviated from the pregame plan by holding Pryor out of the fourth quarter and shortening the period from 12 minutes to eight.

Yeah, you shouldn't read much into -17 yards rushing when Pryor wasn't allowed to scramble in the first quarter and could be "sacked" by being tapped with two hands. That's probably why that stat is under-reported. Pryor looked much improved, but I'm much more happy about the defense. A few young linebackers were everywhere and the defensive line is finally going to be able to keep O-linemen from reaching the second level. The safeties are experienced and will be solid. I'm excited...and I've read a lot from people that were there and who don't write for the Dispatch. It was a good showing on Saturday. 95,000+ isn't bad either.

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Brandon Saine, RB

No longer should the junior be considered a sprinter who happens to play football. As he showed in four carries to open the third quarter for Gray, he has developed running back skills. He slashed 17 yards though left tackle, went 21 yards on a play that started inside but found him outrunning everybody to the edge, powered 10 yards through a hole at right guard, then carried two more over left tackle. The effort put Saine back in the picture for the fall, where he is expected to share time with Daniel Herron. Bothered by injuries last season, Saine gained just 65 yards on 26 carries. Yesterday, he gained 50 on those first four carries alone.

Justin Boren, OL

A Pickerington North graduate, he transferred from Michigan. He had to sit out the 2008 season, but the joke going around was he was still the Buckeyes' best offensive lineman. He showed what the buzz this spring has been about. He spent a lot of time at left tackle because of Gray shortcomings on the line, but he still delivered punishing blocks, helping spring Saine on some of his runs. His regular position is left guard, and those paying attention saw him play with a physical zeal. He has been off-limits to the media all month, and there are some defensive linemen who probably wish he had been off-limits to them, too.

Josh Kerr, OL

Chances are he's not going to start in the fall, but there was evidence of why offensive coordinator Jim Bollman often includes the junior in any conversation about the line. Kerr, a tackle, went against OSU's best pass-rusher, Thaddeus Gibson, several times and often held his own. With the returnees on the No. 1 line being shuffled around center Mike Brewster -- last year's right tackle Bryant Browning is at right guard; left guard Jim Cordle is at right tackle; Boren has stepped in at left guard -- and with Andy Miller and Mike Adams competing at left tackle, the Buckeyes still need depth. Kerr looks like he can provide some.

Brian Rolle, LB

Just as he had done all month in practice, he kept popping up where the ball was and getting in on tackles. He led all defenders with 11 tackles, eight of them solo. Unlike earlier scrimmages, though, there was not a defining, memorable pop. Rolle, 5 feet 11 and 221 pounds, showed why he will play more in the fall. He benefited from a shuffling in the linebacker ranks as Ross Homan, the only returning starter, sat out most contact drills because of a hamstring pull. Rolle played considerably at middle linebacker with Austin Spitler filling Homan's outside spot.

Tyler Moeller, LB

No longer just sharing time with Jermale Hines as a nickel back, he's back to being a true linebacker. But his desire is still the same, as he showed on what was the longest play from scrimmage. In part because of a lead block from fullback Jermil Martin, Gray running back Marcus Williams burst through a hole over the left side in the second half and seemed gone for a touchdown. But Moeller ran him down at the 8-yard line. He proved what fans saw glimpses of last year -- until the whistle blows, he's going to try to hit the player with the ball.

Aww, poor Justine has to be sheltered from the big bad media? JT wants to make sure she doesn't get asked a tough question and then have a breakdown. I guess JT is willing to bend over backwards to accomodate this fat, soft, sensitive piece of crap instead of investing his energy in more pressing concerns.

Where's the other part of the article, the bottom five. Or maybe that was a different article. Anyway, as I've said I'll give TP some credit on the TD to Small, that was a great pass. The other TD surely is nothing to get excited about. Yeah, he threw the ball 50 yards. But, the defense completely fell asleep out there. When you give a receiver a 15 yard cushion, anyone can complete that pass.
