View Full Version : The Real Unemployment Numbers for May

Once again you can't get the truth by watching the news, or you get some distorted version. When this report first came out, the stock market skyrocketed, then after people actually took the time to read it everyone came back down to earth.

The number you are going to here used over and over again is 345,000 jobs lost (only!) which is "much better than expected". Job losses are slowing down. The economy is finally turning the corner! (hooray)

But wait a minute...

http://www.bls.gov/news.release/empsit.nr0.htm

The number of unemployed persons increased by 787,000 to 14.5 million
in May, and the unemployment rate rose to 9.4 percent.

Well how does this square with the number being reported? Simple. The first number is "payroll" which for sake of argument is full time positions. The second number counts people who worked part time jobs or contract jobs. That's why the national unemployment rate *still* shot up another .5%. The other thing you won't hear is hours worked decreased and wages fell, again.

I guess the media figures if you just lie to people long enough or give them whatever percieved notion of recovery you feed them month after month, eventually they will just believe it.

If you tell a big enough lie and tell it frequently enough, it will be believed.

Make the lie big, make it simple, keep saying it, and eventually they will believe it.

If Bush or any other Republican were in office the story would have been about the increasing unemployment instead of decreasing job losses. These guys are idiots because logic dictates that at some point job losses will slow down because there are a finite number of jobs.

And I agree with Medic, what about lower wages and less hours worked? This year I've managed to work 40 hours only 5 weeks and this is quite common around the country especially in the auto industry and manaufacturing. For myself its hurt slightly because my wife makes good money. But for many people they have the only income in their household and have had to pick up a part time job, make severe budget cuts or been forced to declare bankruptcy. Does anyone think these numbers make these people feel good? All they see is all these companies receiving billions of dollars while they're wondering where their bailout money is as the creditors are pounding on their doors.

Sadaam helped sell the lie.

Imagine that a leader in the mideast lies to the USA and UN. As the most power nation on the planet it was our duty to know the truth and tell the truth before ivading. Bush and his comments below will be rememered for ages.

How does it feel to be a member of the 32% of Americans that thought Bush was a good President. You all are so removed from the mainstream it makes me laugh.

The report was released nearly two years ago to the day that President Bush strode onto a stage in Cincinnati and told the audience that Saddam Hussein's Iraq "possesses and produces chemical and biological weapons" and "is seeking nuclear weapons."

"The danger is already significant and it only grows worse with time," Bush said in the speech delivered October 7, 2002. "If we know Saddam Hussein has dangerous weapons today -- and we do -- does it make any sense for the world to wait to confront him as he grows even stronger and develops even more dangerous weapons?"

Us= Mainstream America.

As far as being scary I would put that up with Children of the Corn. The video alone was just stupid but it went to another level with the music.

Mainstream? Are you kidding me? Mainstream zombies are as smart as Britney Spears on cocaine.

Funny how you keep claiming your views to be "mainstream America". If thats what the mainstream is I don't want to be part of it. Mainstream America only cares to get their news from 5 second soundbites typically from some celebrity who hasn't a clue.

As for the the lies all Hussein had to do was allow the weapons inspectors to do their jobs and everything would have been ok. Everyone and their brother thought they had them, that was the mainstream America back then. Seeing as they had used them a mere 10 years before very few seriously thought they had gotten rid of them. The conflict wasn't just about WMD but also about the fact that Hussein would not allow the inspectors to do their UN mandated jobs.

We can argue all day about WMD but the fact is its done and over with and I for one am still glad we did in order to get rid of that loose cannonball over there. And I imagine there are more than a few Iraqis who agree with that sentiment. Its the media and their focus on the negative aspect of bodycount that turned this conflict into something negative. The goals have almost been completed of a free Iraq governed by the Iraqi people.

If anyone cares to make the arguement that going into Iraq caused Muslims to hate us..........HELLO, they've hated us for decades! They've hated us because of the meddling our gov't has done since the 60's.

Now honestly, zilla, did you think Sadam had WMDs before the war? I'm not asking if you thought we should go to war, but did you think he had them? He had used them to kill what...5000 kurds some years earlier? He never showed that he destroyed them and he was stonewalling the UN inspectors. You called Castro war hungry, but this guy had actually done some nasty shit. He did actually initiate the Gulf War by invading Kuwait. Nobody will ever know how many people he brutalized and killed in his secret tourture chambers. This guy was nuts and a sadist at that. You can't blame Americans if they believed that the guy had those weapons. As for our national intel....well, that certainly was a clusterfuck wasn't it? You may have a point that they owed it to the American public to get the facts straight, but then again it is war. Coming off of 9-11, I'm kind of glad we didn't dilly dally around waiting for him to comply. Bottom line is we weren't attacked for the rest of GWB's administration; we'll see how your boy Obama does. If it ever does happen, don't even try to say that GWB's policies caused them to hate us. That dog won't hunt. If we get attacked, it's because of weakass policy and trying to appease those bastards.

Sadaam Hussein was our good friend and aly when he was in the 10 year war with Iran. Osama Bin Laden was our good friend and aly when he was "freedom fighter" battling the Soviet Union in Afghanistan.

The United States is hated by the Middle Eastern countries because of our foreign policy in the region. President George W. Bush is not the only former president who has made stupid foreign policy decisions. He is only getting more criticism than others because he made a greater number of dumb decisions. It didn't help his case that he did not understand that the population of Iraq was made up of shiites, sunnis and Kurds and these people had hated each other for thousands of years.

I had a case of the shiites - you should've seen the kurd I left in the toliet. Then I wiped where the sunni doesn't shine.

Very illustrative description, Medic.

Sorry for my contribution, but these things do get off course sometimes.

Bottomline: Your thread's been hijacked.

I can appreciate zilla's zeal for his guy Obama, but waving that Bush/WMD's strawman around is so tired.

You can't change the facts.
