Good pick-ups.

From mgoblog.

Michigan managed to score two commits while I was in an airport or waiting on a runway for two bonus hours of incredible fun or actual in transit or watching Italy-USA, about which I have to say aaaargh aaaargh Rossi aaaargh.

Tom Van Haaren caught up with commit #1, TX OLB Holmes Onwukaife, this afternoon. Commit #2 is SC QB Cornelius Jones, about whom more later. First, Onwukaife's awesome highlight video, which features the best highlight music ever and lightning bolts.

Not really sure what to think. He really hasn't been rated by ANY of the services. I can't find any video of him anywhere. He's got good size, and his 40 time seems less fake than most.

If anything, he provides some needed depth at QB. If he doesn't work there, he'll move after UM gets more depth at QB.

Found this at mgoblog:

The only video is at Scout but that's behind a pay wall. I haven't seen any film elsewhere.

FWIW, he allegedly looked pretty good during the camp the last two days.

Camp report is that he has very good mechanics, good ball spin. He made Elite 11 at the UGa camp as well.

On a side note, in a supposedly WR-talent heavy camp, who steals the show? Jeremy Jackson. Evidently, kid will bring just about anything down. Awesome :D.

GBW and TheWolverine are both reporting on their front pages that South Carolina QB/Athlete Cornelius Jones has pledged his word to become a Michigan Wolverine. Jones hails from Spartanburg HS in Spartanburg, SC, and is Michigan’s 14th public commitment in the class of 2010. The signal-caller stands 6-2 and 190 pounds.

Recruiting Notes
Aside from the obvious prospects like Devin Gardner, Jones was one of the first players to enter Michigan fans’ collective radar for the class of 2010. Despite not playing football his freshman or sophomore year, apparently due to a disciplinary issue (or problem with the previous coaching staff; it’s never really been cleared up, Jones’s highlight tape from a spring scrimmage found its way into the hands of Michigan’s coaching staff. Rich Rodriguez and company liked what they saw, and extended a verbal offer (which the Detroit media, in full anti-Rodriguez mode at the time, spun to indicate that Rod was clueless or something). As it turned out, the offer did not come through at that time, but Michigan offered him in January, and was still among his first offers. It was that early interest that helped Michigan stay in the forefront of his recruitment, as the Wolverines led wire-to-wire. Jones always maintained that he was trying to work out a visit to Michigan, and that visit eventually ended up taking place for the Wolverines’ 2009 summer camp. At that time, he realized Ann Arbor was the place for him, and he committed to don the maize-and-blue.

Player Notes
Jones is a dual-threat quarterback in the same mold as Devin Gardner, who can really hurt you with his feet, and has some improving to do in the passing game (certainly understandable for a high school junior). Jones isn’t quite the physical specimen that Garnder is, but might be a slightly better passer at this time. That’s an exciting prospect for Michigan fans, as he’s only played football (and quarterback) for one year thus far! With further coaching at both the high school and college levels, he should blossom into a true threat in both phases of the game.

That's good to hear about Jeremy. I was really confused by his ranking.

That is awesome. It's because he is going to Michigan, the services dock him a star because of that.

That and his speed. He is a case of a smart football player, who makes up for lack of top-end speed with his size and route running.

Good pickups in needed areas for depth. I think JJ will suprise A LOT of people. Coaches son's usually have good mechanics and a good feel for the game. They also have to play harder than the others to prove themselves.

Not Used to Lightning Bolts
Do you think those were added during editing, or do you think we picked up a defensive player who is powered by lightning bolts? Do we need to provide our own lightning-bolt producing blimp or does he bring it with him? Does the NCAA have any rules about defensive players being charged by lightning bolts immediately before the snap?

What happens to Onwukaife if he isn't charged by a lightning bolt before the play? How many downs can he get off of the 1.21 gigawatts of electricity generated by the lightning bolt? If he stunts and, say, Will Campbell ends up outside, will he accidentally get hit by lightning? I don't think Big Will would like that...

Those are just my concerns. Overall, I think having a cyborg player that gets charged by lightning bolts is a really cool idea -- never would have happened under Carr I bet!

This team is under construction. We thank you for your patience.

The more ive read about Jones the more excited I get. He is a complete unkown but the early buzz is very encouraging. Its a perfect opportunity for Michigan and Rodriguez. A project with HUGE potential. A diamond in the rough. Getting a recruit like this is why I have no worries about the coaching staff and their recruiting tactics. They know how to recognize talent.
