Eight team - use the four major bowls (Rose, Sugar, Fiesta, and Orange) - with their traditional (Pre BCS) alignments on or about New Year's Day - the six major conference champions are automatic qualifiers, with two at-large entries - either strong mid-majors like Utah / Boise State this season, and / or a team like Texas that just got screwed in their selection process.

Then two national semifinals - perhaps east and west, the second Saturday in January, and a national final on the weekend between the NFL conference championships and the SuperBowl. The sites for the semi's and NC game can move from season to season.

If you're in a major conference, it's pretty simple - WIN your conference.

I think you could do a 10 team playoff format. Let the top 2 BCS teams have a bye in the first round. Also in order to have an auto birth the BCS conf champs should be ranked in the top 25 minimum, otherwise their spot reverts to an at-large.

Wolverin704,

If you did a 10 team playoff, I think six teams would have a bye in the first round - since, you're going to have to get to 4 games in the next round - which is 8 teams.

You're right, I had it mapped out wrong.
