Tiger misses cut.
Tom Watson leads.
What the hell is going on?

I have nothing against Tiger Woods - he's quite incredible. But, the one thing I can not stand is the incessant coverage of him on the golf course. If Tiger would have made the cut (on the cut line), I'm confident we would have seen more of him than the second, third, fourth, and fifth place golfers combined - despite the fact that he was 8 strokes off the pace.
What I find interesting is the cut line - top 70 and ties, not "anyone within ten strokes of the lead" - which is what the US Open cut line is.
I look forward to the weekend of golf, and have my fingers crossed that Watson keeps up his excellent play.

I have my own little conspiracy theory about Tiger. I think he had been "throwing" (not really trying) these Majors since the Masters. I think he really wants to pass Jack on the wings of a "grand slam." Isn't it a little funny that he demolishes the competition the week (or 2 weeks) before the major, but then bombs? I give him 50/50 odds of succeeding at the PGA championship. I think he will put everything into a grandslam to pass Jack next year starting with the Masters. I think next years Masters will be the most determined golf we have ever seen from the man.

Gator,
I've got to disagree with you here. You've got to get a major whenever you have the chance - but, if the British Open cut was actually 10 strokes within the lead, Tiger would have played the weekend.
I think that Tiger's game just isn't as sharp, week-in and week-out, as its been in the past, and there is a lot of up and coming talent in golf.
As for the British Open, or as some call it - The Open, I would have preferred Stewart Cink win the PGA - another major - I was pulling for Watson in a huge way, and I think he got a little too hard of a bounce on his approach into 18. If his approach would have landed two yards shorter than what it did, he would have two putted to win - I'm 99% sure of that.
Congrats to Cink - my heart goes out to Watson.

Yeah, I'm not saying this is the gospel truth or anything here. Like I said it's a conspircacy theory (hell, I only half believe it myself). I too keep telling myself he's got to get every major he can. On the other hand, he's the best golfer we've ever seen (even though Jack has more majors), and maybe he wants to do something special when he passes him. Like I said, it's just a little odd that he's killing it a week or two before the past two majors (as well as being a damn near decisive favorite going into the tournaments) and he hasn't even been competitive in the majors. Maybe it's only subliminal but it just hasn't seemed like he competed in the past two majors. Hence, I give him 50/50 in the PGA championship. However, I guarantee you that Tiger wants a real grandslam and it hasn't escaped him that he's just 4 majors short of jack. I stand by my earlier statement that next year's Masters may be the most determined we have ever seen the man.
