Since there are so many people here who are familiar with all of the nuances of college offensive schemes and the version the Buckeyes are putting on the field, I thought I'd ask the question - "what is the Pistol offense?"
I've heard several people refer to it -and rave about it. My question is - what is it?

just another name for a weak version of the spread, as you have seen it doesnt work very well, at one point last season ohio state was ranked 85th in offense , pretty pathetic if you ask me . and you are correct this is a name tressel eses to sound like he knows what he is doing , JUST ASK ANY BUCKEYE FAN AND THEY WILL ALL TELL YOU TRESSEL NEEDS TO HAND OVER THE O TO SOMEONE WHO KNOWS WHAT THEIR DOING, ISNT THAT RIGHT NUTPUSSSS...

Its a hybrid of the shotgun and single back offenses. The QB lines up 3 yds behind center and the RB lines up a yd behind him. It was created by Nevada coach Chris Ault and implemented in 2004. He credits the inspiration for it on the Nebraska performance in the 1997 Fiesta Bowl where they ran the option from a spread offense. It is used primarily by Nevada and has been used to some extent by LSU, Syracuse and Mizzou.
This offense is really built to take advantage of a dual threat QB and can use various formations.
The funny thing is last season all we heard from the trolls was that the spread is a crock despite being such a widespread offense now. Yet they are using thats even less used and really is a variant of the same spread they claimed last year was a gimmick.

That was something that was put together because you had a true freshman QB and a very strong running back in Beanie Wells. I think this year you will still see it - but you will see more true spread as well. Expect a lot of roll outs from TP. Your going to see him moving around in an effort to make the secondary react. If the secondary does not react he can run for large chunks of yardage and if they do react to soon guys will be wide open in the secondary. All the pistol does is buy TP a few more seconds to look things over without having to drop back.

Nut,
Is this a few more seconds every play? A FEW MORE SECONDS? Come on - let's get serious here - if it buys him half a second (not that it isn't a good thing).
But, I find your opinion quite interesting. It sounds like OSU is going to go "less" to the Pistol and more toward "true spread". So, is OSU's primary offensive scheme a true spread this season, and for the next two that TP's around? If so, I'm smiling...

The pistol was designed to give TP some space and to let him focus a bit faster on the WR's. He does not have to worry about getting the snap and dropping back. You will never see 100% spread at Ohio State - that is not Tressel's style. He will still play it close to the vest when winning - that is just who he is. I do expect the Buckeyes to be much faster this year. They will also try to get their playmakers in space so they can create. This should be a very exciting year of Buckeye football.

THE PISTOL WAS NOT DESIGNED FOR TP!!!!!!!
Did you not read my post? The Pistol was designed by Nevada's coach and JT is using it to take advantage of TP's abilities and inexperience.

The Ohio State version was made or put in place souly for TP. That is why when Boeckman came it they did not run it. I never said Tressel invented the Pistol. Just like RR did not invent the spread.

I know what you mean but what you wrote reads like JT designed the Pistol O solely for TP.Its like saying RR designed the spread for Tate or Pat White.Although RR is a spread innovator.

who gives a shit about him rolling out. teams will stack the box and make him pass. HE CAN NOT PASS, and no amount of your lying bullshit will change that. they may win 8 or so games this year but it'll be close.

I think the main issue is that he needs to be able to make the short and intermediate passes with accuracy. Sure he has arm strength but in a spread type attack being able to make the shorter passes accurately is what keeps the defense honest and the chains moving. I look forward to seeing OSU play Navy to see if TP has actually developed as the trolls claim. IMO, when he gets in trouble and decides to pass he's usually looking to chuck it deep.
